Twitter just announced the public availability of their Geotagging API.
The feature is optional and enables users to find the location of the tweets they receive, which means they can find tweets and twitters by location. User's will have to opt-in to geolocation by going to settings menu in order to use this feature.
Although not much change has been done to Twitter.com, some of the Twitter applications (Birdfeed, Seesmic Web, Twidroid, Twittelator Pro etc) support this feature already.
This a step towards microblogging and will put Twitter in a whole new light. Now Twitter users will abe able to find Social recommendations from people who have actually been to the specific location (With the Location Stamp now there's proof!). It will also open up channels for Social Networking, with the ability to find people in the area.
