Sam Mendes is reportedly putting together a series of commercials for Apple's next iPhone. Mendes is a well-known English stage and film director who’s won two Laurence Olivier Awards for his London stage productions The Glass Menagerie and Company in 1996, and Twelfth Night and Uncle Vanya in 2003. A Tony Award nomination was handed to Mendes for Best Direction of a Musical for the Broadway revival of Cabaret in 1998. American Beauty (1999), his debut film, earned Mendes an Academy Award for Best Director.
The commercials are currently in the pre-production phase and are said to be heavily focusing on the new iPhone’s video chat capabilities. With such expertise behind the making of the ad, it’s a pretty safe bett hat the attributes of the upgraded iPhone will look pretty amazing, not that the handset needs any more hype than it’s already receiving ahead of the likely unveiling at the 2010 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). We can expect it to be announced by no other than Steve Jobs himself who recently announced that he will be kicking off the event on June 7th with a keynote address at 10 a.m. PST.
As of right now, it isn’t known when the commercials will begin airing, but auditions have recently been held to cast the stars of the commercial. According to Engadget, the commercial will likely be showcasing a mom and her daughter sharing a touching moment in conversation via video chat on the iPhone. Sam Mendes will be helping tell the “story” and bring the magical plot to life for the new iPhone, which is internally being referred to at Apple as the “Mammoth / N90.”
