Seagate Confirms 3TB HD To Come Later This Year

Barbara Craig, Seagate’s senior product manager confirmed rumors that the company will be releasing a massive 3TB drive later this year. Unfortunately XP users will need to upgrade, as the drive will require a 64-bit OS.

The 3TB drive jump had its own fair share of obstacles as the current LBA (logical blocking addressing) standard set in 1980 only supports capacities up to 2.1 TB. Craig said that the drive’s full power will only be accessible with 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Vista, as well as some modified versions of Linux.

Seagates determination to go big rather than going home was definitely something to admire. Craig only said to expect an announcement “later this year,” which should give everyone plenty of time to start hoarding any and every file you can get your hands on.
