[How To] Install iMovie On iPhone 3GS

Sources at RedmondPie have confirmed that iMovie for iPhone 4 has been successfully ported to an iPhone 3GS. It was originally rumored that iMovie for iPhone only works on iPhone 4 due to the exclusive availability of 512 MB of RAM. Now, you can see that the application works almost flawlessly on a 256 MB of RAM device.

David Romhan Torres, has managed to "port", more correctly put, modified, the iMovie app to work on the iPhone 3GS.
"just download the file, modify info.plist file and change the Minimum system version to 3.0.0 and UIRequiredDeviceCapabilities/front-facing-camera to false"

Important:

The hack requires you to modify info.plist and .ipa file, which involved SSH skills, jailbreaking, and editing of the internal iMovie for iPhone application files and it also breaks Apple’s DRM.

How To Install iMovie on iPhone 3GS:

  • download iMovie from iTunes
  • open the bundle in finder and modify info.plist file
  • change the Minimum system version to 3.0.0 and front-facing-camera to false
  • save and install on your iPhone 3GS through iTunes

The fact that iMovie can run from a modified plist/ipa no problem, then perhaps Apple DOES still have plans for rolling out iMovie to other compatible iDevices, and they just wanted to focus on the iPhone 4 first because it has HD. We will keep you posted on how this unfolds in the future. In the mean time if you have successfully gotten iMovie to work on your older models of iPhone/iPodTouch do let us know in the comments below.
