[How To] Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4 GM With RedSn0w 0.9.5 Beta

MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team has announced that it is possible to jailbreak iOS 4 using jailbreak tool - Redsn0w. RedSn0w 0.9.5 is still in beta and is meant for developers only so that they may get their jailbreak apps ready for the release of iOS 4.
For those who can legitimately activate to the iPhone3G 4.0GM seed, the “point to previous IPSW” redsn0w trick works and will jailbreak your 4.0GM. The “trick” is to point redsn0w at the 4.0beta4 IPSW instead of 4.0GM (do this after you’ve updated to 4.0GM and activated through the new iTunes 9.2 on your Mac). Since the carrier unlocks aren’t yet supported at 4.0, don’t do this if you use yellowsn0w/ultrasn0w/blacksn0w. Many JB apps are still pretty buggy in 4.0, so again this is mostly useful only for developers of those JB apps.

Note: If you’re experiencing MobileSafari crashes, double check that you’re running the version at the bottom of this page.

For those without legit iPhone3G 4.0GM seed access, please wait until the full public 4.0 release for updates to the jailbreak tools.

WARNING:

  • This guide is for Already jailbroken iPhone 3G users only. and works on Mac OS only.
  • Redsn0w is a jailbreak utility, it does NOT provide a carrier unlock. iOS 4 GM comes with newer Baseband 05.13. So, unlockers depending on either UltraSn0w or BlackSn0w better avoid this update.
  • If you’re new to the game or do NOT know what you’re doing, better wait for the official jailbreak tool to come out.

Jailbreak iPhone 3G iOS 4 GM with RedSn0w 0.9.5 Beta:

STEP 1 -

Download required files:
  1. Download iTunes 9.2 Beta
  2. Download RedSn0w 0.9.5b4
  3. Download iOS 4 GM

STEP 2 –

  1. Install iOS 4 on your iPhone 3G. To accomplish this you will need iTunes 9.2 beta to do that.

STEP 3 –

  1. Run the downloaded RedSn0w 0.9.5 beta.
  2. Select the Browser button. Select the iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 (that’s the tricky part) yes, point to beta 4 NOT iOS 4 GM.
  3. Select Cydia and then hit the next button.
  4. You will be instructed to put your iPhone into DFU Mode to install jailbreak.
  5. Once the phone has rebooted, you will notice Cydia has a blank white icon (as expected many things are broken at the moment!) You will also notice Cydia has no sources. Go to the Sources panel and add the following repo - repo: http://apt.saurik.com/cydia-3.7 (be sure you have a carrier or WiFi signal first!). When Cydia restarts, you should see its real logo now, and the standard sources should be ready to use.
