iTunes App Store Fraud and Hacked Accounts Discovered
Earlier today there appeared to be an iTunes App Store fraud situation going on. It was basically in the Book category and a seller named That Nguyen, whose company website ("mycompany") lead to a parked site www.home.com, somehow owned 42 of the top 50 books by revenue. Several of the book apps were released in April with little to no customer ratings or reviews and appeared to be in Vietnamese (even though English and Japanese were claimed to be supported languages). The apps could have been infringing upon copyrighted work as well. So how did all these books hit the top of the charts?
This is where iTunes account hacking came into play, with several people reporting up to hundreds of dollars spent unwilling from their account to these specific books. Doesn't really seem like a coincidence to us. You might want to check your own Apple Account information just to be safe. The "mycompany" titles seem to all have disappeared from the App Store and we are unsure of what exactly happened. Whether Apple decided to shut down the whole operation or whether the seller pulled them himself.
Keep an eye out on your own account info though to make sure something like that doesn't happen to you, and stay tuned for more news and info by following us on Twitter and/or subscribing to our RSS feeds.
