Apple has started shipping devices with bootroms not vulnerable to previous exploits. So far, these devices include at least the iPod touch 3G. They also likely include the new 8GB iPod touch 2G and very recent versions of the iPhone 3GS. For these devices, even though an iBoot exploit can make your filesystem jailbroken, the device itself is not bootable after that point without being “tethered” to something like a computer (must plug the device to the computer and run Blackra1n, see guide)
The following things are needed to jailbreak your iPhone.
Please make sure you have a working copy of iTunes installed and ready to run as well as the appropriate OS 3.1.2 (depending on what type of iPhone you have) and Pwnage tool downloaded before following through with the instructions.
Preparing Your Custom Firmware
1. Run the downloaded Pwnage Tool software. Hit OK to the copyright message.
2. Select Expert Mode on the top of the Pwnage Tool and proceed by selecting the type of iPhone you have by selecting the appropriate iPhone picture. Then hit Next.
3. This should select the 3.1.2 Firmware that you have previously downloaded. If the Pwnage Tool hasn’t already found the correct file then browse and select it. Then hit Next.
4. Select General and then hit Next.
5. Disable Activate the phone and make sure your partition size is a decent portion (Changing the size affects the room Cydia will have available, 700 MB is what I chose), after you are done hit
Next.
6. Uncheck Neuter Bootloader and hit Next.
7. Under Custom Package Settings check Cydia Installer off and hit Next.
8. Uncheck both Custom Logo Settings and hit Next.
9. Select Build and hit Next.
10. Choose a place to save your Custom Firmware file and hit Save, then wait for the file to be built (This may take several minutes, just let it take its time.)
11. Put in your password when prompted and wait for the next message to pop up.
Pwning Your iPhone and Installing the CFW
This step has been simplified thanks to Pwnage tool and will pick up right where you left off from before. There are only a few steps to correctly do this.
1. When prompted asking whether you have Pwned your iPhone before or not, hit No and follow the procedures outlined by the Pwnage Tool.
2. When finished close Pwnage Tool and open iTunes up.
3. Your iPhone will be picked up and will need to be restored but before hitting the “Restore” button, make sure you are holding down the option button (This will allow you to select which iPhone
firmware you wish you install onto your phone).
4. Select the custom firmware that we built in the first part of this guide and hit Open.
5. Let iTunes finish installing the software and then hit OK when the next message pops up.
You have just finished jailbreaking your iPhone, congratulations.
Enabling Access to Cracked Apps (.ipa Files)
The following things are needed for you to be able to run cracked applications on your jailbroken iPhone.
Please make sure you download the previous files before continuing the guide.
Correctly Installing the installd File
1. Run Cyber Duck and hit “Open Connection”.
2. Select SFTP (SSH File Transfer Protocol) and put your iPhone’s IP Addres as the Server information. (To find your iPhone’s IP Address, go to Settings -> WiFi -> Hit the Arrow next to your wireless network and check the IP Address)
3. Put “root” as your username and “alpine” as your password (without the quotations of course), then hit Connect.
4. Once you are connected go to the /usr/libexec folder. Place your downloaded installd file in here.
5. Change the permission to your newly added installd file to 0755.
You may now successfully run any cracked application, congratulations.
