NVIDIA Optimus Optimizes Laptop Battery Life

If you think about it logically, having control over the graphics card your laptop runs on seems to make sense. NVIDIA's new Optimus technology looks like it's going to implement just that. Why did it take someone so long to come up with this? It is just irony at it's finest. The idea behind this technology is that you don't have to manually toggling between the powerful discrete GPU and the power-saving integrated chip. The software and hardware combo that NVIDIA has in the works will take care of deciding which graphics processor is best for the application or content. To provide an example for those who still don't understand the concept of what this new technology does exactly, for instance, if someone was to launch Call of Duty 4, the discrete GPU will power on. If you were to close out and start writing an email, it will switch to the integrated graphics processor. It may seem simple but underneath the hood, it is much more complicated to accomplish but Nvidia has moved to running the drivers for both graphics cards concurrently and removed the multiplexers under the hood.

Unsurprisingly Intel did not assist NVIDIA with any of this but Optimus will work with the new Intel chips coming to the market. So whats the big deal about this? How does this help the average consumer? Simple answer: Optimized laptop battery life. The average battery life will last longer with this technology so people will be able to use their laptops for longer without having to charge the machine as often.
