The rumor which seems to be circulating the air waves is that a number of consumers are confused between the 4th generation iPhone and 4G network. However, speculation is that it’s just a nickname for the next version and most definitely will not be the name at the time of release.
The reasoning behind this is that people assumed that the next iPhone would be called 4G because of previous names of the handset. It started with the 2G then went to 3G then 3GS. So its understandable that the public would think that the next iPhone would be 4G.
As of now, worldwide line up of a faster 4G ultra-broadband wireless network has not passed the fetal stage. There are 4G testing coverage in some major cities in the US, which is done by Verizon and Sprint. It will be awhile before the nation wide rollout.
AT&T and T-Mobile won't begin roll out of 4G networks until 2011, they are way behind in the in the 4G roll out. As for the rest of the world, Japan, South Korea, Norway, Russia, Sweden, and Taiwan have begun the first steps toward a 4G rollout
Speculation is that a handset called the iPhone 4G will be available as soon as there's enough 4G wireless coverage to warrant putting a 4G antenna and chipset in it. In the mids of all the speculation and confusion I guess the name remains till the roll out in the summer.
Within apple product lines, the names remain the same. For example the current 64 GB iPod touch has the same name as the 8 GB iPod touch that came out in 2007 despite all the changes and new features it stills remain the same. We believe that In fact, the iPhone is the only device Apple sells that's had name changes for each one of its versions.
