The Android Market has a lot of catching up to do compared to the Apple’s App Store but they are certainly picking up the pace rather quickly. In March, according to Androlib, over 9,000 applications were added but that could mean more problems.
One of the advantages of the Android Market so far is that though the market is smaller, it’s been relatively free of junk and crappy apps (well for the most part.) But that’s the inevitable trade-off with a large ecosystem, the more viable a platform becomes, the more developers it’s going to attract.
The Android market openness, while certainly an asset in promoting more growth, could make for a major clutter down the line. Even with an approval process, Apple’s App Store has plenty of worthless and/or copycat applications. Without any sort of filter, the Android Market could quickly become an unwieldy bazaar.
As for now, it is pretty impressive to grow from 5,532 app increase in February to 9,330 in March. Currently there are just over 30,000 applications in the Android Market today, lets hope most of them stay useful.
