CDMA Capable iPhone Entering Production For Verizon
Seems like Apple may already have placed for the manufacture of iPhones set to run on Verizon’s CDMA phone network. Digitimes reports that manufacturer, Pegatron, has been contracted to make the CDMA iPhone. “Pegatron Technology has received orders for an iPhone based on CDMA from Apple with annual shipments expected to reach 10 million units,” the report says. However, the new device isn’t expected to start “contributing to the Taiwan-based company’s revenues [until] August or September, according to sources from component makers.” This suggests a late summer launch for the phone on the Verizon network, potentially giving current carrier AT&T a few months head start on selling the device, a not to the existing AT&T / Apple exclusivity deal.
Spun off from Asustek Computer’s manufacturing arm in 2008, Pegatron has declined to comment on the report. Apple currently has it iPhones manufactured by Asustek competitor, Hon Hai Precision (Foxconn), though Asustek does manufacture some Mac models for the company.
A Wall Street Journal report earlier this year had also speculated on a deal with Pegatron, writing, “There has been lots of incorrect speculation on CDMA iPhones for a long time. We haven’t seen one yet and only Apple knows when that might occur.” Apple declined to comment on the situation though.
Since then, of course, two conflicting stories have emerged, one claiming Apple has exclusive deal with AT&T set to last until 2012, another claiming Verizon is already engaged in creating brand marketing for its new iPhone. We for sure know that we can expect to learn more at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) next month.
