[How To] Monitor AT&T Data Usage

Mozy Remote Backup. Free.Automatic.Secure.

AT&T has announced the new data plans in order to support tethering feature on the iPad and the upcoming iPhone 4G / HD. As per AT&T the Unlimited plan will still be available, but will not have the tethering option. So, if you are looking to tether iPad / iPhone you will need to switch to one of the new Data Plus or Data Pro plan and add tethering option in addition to that.

Unless you’re planning to tether, it’s pretty easy to predict how much data you’ll use in the future by looking into how much you’ve used in the past. Here's how -

How to monitor AT&T Data Usage:

  • Navigate to www.wireless.att.com and log into your account
  • Click on My Accounts and select Bill & Payments
  • Click Billing Reports -> select Data Usage Trends from the drop down menu -> select the time billing period
  • Hit Submit

If you’re an iPhone user, you can simply grab AT&T’s myWireless Mobile app from the App Store. Unfortunately you’re restricted to viewing your usage from the current billing cycle, but we are hoping with all these changes from AT&T the app will get an update.

On the contrary, you can use the AT&T Data Calculator tool to estimate the approximate data usage on your wireless device by following these steps:
  1. Go to the Data Calculator page.
  2. The Data Calculator page has eight interactive slide bars, one for each of the data services on your wireless device, such as emails sent/received, web pages viewed, songs downloaded, etc.
  3. Click on drop-down menus below each slide bar to estimate your usage by month or day.
  4. Estimate your data usage by dragging the slide bars sideways for services available on your account.
  5. Your total estimated data usage, for all services selected, appears on the large slide bar at the bottom of the page (in orange). Total data usage is shown in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB) by month.
  6. As you drag each slide bar, the Data Calculator will estimate your approximate total data usage for all services in the main slide bar at the bottom of the page (in orange). Your approximate Total estimated usage will be is shown in megabytes (MB) or gigabytes (GB)
  7. Clear the Data Calculator by selecting Reset Calculator.
