iPhone 4 Proximity Sensor Issues Arise

A large number of iPhone 4 users are reporting the touchscreen becoming active during phone calls when the phone's proximity sensor would normally shut it off, leading to inadvertent button-presses. The reports are coming in with enough consistency and frequency to suspect a hardware or calibration issue that might be found in some of the iPhones. Apple has released no information yet. The iPhone's proximity sensor uses a small infrared LED and uses the reflection from nearby objects to determine when to deactivate the screen. If you hold it up to an iSight or other camera that can read nearby infrared light, you can usually see the glow. The problem may be in how sensitive the detector is set up to be on some phones OR it could be an actual problem with the detector itself.

Not everyone has been reporting issues though whereas others have had non stop issues with the sensor doing all sorts of things, such as initiating FaceTime cals when the phone was held close to the head. Apple even has a Support thread with many similar reports. Does anyone else have issues with this? Let us know your experience in the comments below.
