Upcoming UltraSn0w Update To Unlock iPhone 4 Baseband

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

The iPhone Dev Team and the other popular hackers have been looking through the iPhone 4 hardware and software and have noticed that the baseband runs a completely different OS than that of previous models. Both the iPhone 3G, the 3GS, and even the iPad run Nucleus OS on the PMB8878 baseband CPU (aka XGold 608), while the iPhone 2G ran on the PMB8876 (aka S-Gold 2). The new iteration of the iPhone (the iPhone 4) runs on the PMB9800 (aka X-Gold 618), which runs on a separate OS - Thread X, an RTOS by ExpressLogic.

So what does this mean to the average person? Basically, the unlock for the iPhone 4 won't be released right away. The iOS 4 can already be unlocked using UltraSn0w 0.93 on the earlier iPhone models, but the hackers will need to work on it some more for the iPhone 4 once an exploit is discovered in the new baseband OS. Hopefully they aren't too far off and the port itself introduced some exploits to work with but as for now, there is no way to estimate how long it might take.
