We just recently received a tip about the HTC Droid Incredible software update that many users are probably waiting to hear about. An email from HTC sent in as a tip mentioned the following information:

I wanted to pass along that the upcoming Incredible MR will also include Froyo (originally it was going to be two separate MRs).

We are targeting the end of the month/first part of August. As a reminder, below are the highlights:

  • Froyo

  • 802.11 n

  • 3G Mobile Hot Spot

  • HTC Widget: Email

  • HTC Widget: News

  • EAS Updates

  • 720p Video Recording

  • Amazon MP3

  • Skype

  • My Verizon

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

The email confirms the much anticipated Incredible update that began rolling out this weekend will most likely be stopped and a much better and improved Froyo-inclusive update will be pushed out in the coming weeks. The update will also include 802.11n Wi-Fi support, 3G Mobile Hot Spot, 720p recording, and more. All pretty good new for Incredible owners. How do you feel about th delayed update? Is Android 2.2 worth the few weeks of waiting? Let us know in the comments below.

HTC's Percentage Response To Apple's Antennagate Demo

Apple's Friday press conference, now dubbed Antennagate conference has definitely angered many, including several rival handset manufacturers. Some of the manufacturers such as Nokia and RIM have released an official response already towards Apple's statements but not all of the companies are taking Cupertino's words and opinions to heart. HTC's Droid Eris was arguably the most affected byt he grip of doom, its bars dropping to zero when held ,but the Taiwanese company's keeping any controversial opinions to itself for now. Instead it simply shared a simple percentage to clear the air.

ZAGGskins

Apple claimed over 0.55 percent of customers called AppleCare with reception-related complains, HTC's Eric Lin informed Pocket-lint the Droid Eris technical suport rate was only 0.016 percent, nearly thirty-four times lower - although with a seven-month head start, we have to wonder if the Eris sold close to three million by the time Verizon bought the axe down. HTC's approach is definitely different from that of the other companies brought into the mix.

Motorola Locks Bootloader On Droid X To Keep Hackers Out

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

There's been a lot of hype about the new Motorola Droid X coming to Verizon. According to a blog post on MotoDev - just like the Motorola Milestone, it appears the upcoming Droid X and Droid 2 will have a digitally signed bootloader that will prevent users from flashing custom ROMs.

Motorola explained their position during the Milestone controversy:

The encrypted bootloader will be a major hurdle to overcome for the modders and hackers. In the mean time if you want to hack your Android phone and mod it ’til it won’t boot anymore, you might be better off going with other HTC models or even Samsung at this point which have all been rooted already.

Slick HTC 1 Concept Designed By Andrew Kim

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

Who doesn't like sleek and stylish looking designs nowadays? We are hoping that HTC is paying good attention to Andrew Kim, the person who created a great looking concept design for the so-called HTC 1. The HTC 1 is supposed to be a premium Android phone that is to be differentiated from the company's mainstream models while better harmonizing physical and software design. With that in mind, Kim has come up with a slick minimalist machined brass with a striking interpretation of the HTC Sense UI. His interpretation breaks down the artificial division of the homescreen and widget, and instead gives you a full screen for widgets to keep you up to do with news, social networking, and more. A new media player and cross-platform instant-messaging / communicating apps were also in mind.

Another thing that is a bit striking was the fact that Kim reckons oleophobic displays aren't good enough for keeping smartphones clean. Instead he decided on a UV light behind the glass touchscreen. The top and bottom panels can serve as flip-down stands and the phone also contains stereo speakers (one at each end) and inspiration taken from Leica camera and high end watches. The end result is a beautifully stunning phone with a sleek and minimalistic design. We wonder if HTC will pursue this concept further and if this high-end Android smartphone will be able to compete in today's market. What do you think? Share your comments below!

Flashlight Application for Android Powered HTC Smartphones

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

Having a flashlight on your device is becoming a necessity for just about all smartphone owners. A member of the XDA Devalopers team - JaydenR extracted the application from Android 2.2 build on the HTC Desire. This application does not need root access to use, so you simply need to install it.

This is the Flashlight apk from the 2.2 Froyo Desire rom. No root is needed and it uses the screen instead of the camera led’s.
Still it’s pretty sweet and looks awesome.
Credit to udK who dropped this rom. All I did was pull it and post it.

Now to answer some questions:
Why do I need this?
You don’t.

Will this break my phone?
Don’t know. Depends what you use it for.

Will this void my warranty?
Its a non root stock HTC apk

Will it help me find my long lost brother?
Who knows

Can I get this from the market?
Nope

How do I install this?

Low End Android Phone "Mororola WX445" Heading to Verizon

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

The folks over at Engadget received a tip about a new Motorola phone, the motorola WX445 for Verizon. The phone is basically a low-end Android phone featuring Android 2.1, a flash-less camera whose pixel count is still unknown, a touchscreen ranging somewhere between 2.5 and 3 inches, and a light 1170mAh battery on board. Rumor has it that it runs Blur and that it isn't a "very impressive phone" and that it has a Pre Plus feel without a keyboard "but cheaper looking." We can't imagine this being an alternative to some of the more popular and more powerful Android phones such as the HTC Evo 4G or the Droid X but it could make an alternative for someone with a Devour.

Stay tuned for more info on this by following us on Twitter and/or subscribing to our RSS feeds. Check out the gallery below for more pictures of the leak:

[How To] Install Android 2.2 Froyo on HTC Desire

If you are one of the HTC Desire users who don't have the patience to wait until Q3 for an official Froyo build then you are in luck. udK_dev, a user from the xda-developer forums has managed to push out a near-perfect Android 2.2 port that works very well so far. The HTC Sense overlay is indeed included and while there are a few quirks here and there, most users who have tried it so far have thoroughly been pleased. The camera has even been upgraded to handle 720p video recording so that is a benefit as well. If you have some time on your hands and want to try it out OR if you really want to jump the bandwagon to Froyo early, check out the steps below:

ROM specs:
  • Android 2.2 Froyo (FRF-85B)
  • Kernel 2.6.32.15
  • New Radio 32.41.00.32U_5.08.00.04
  • New Base v2.04
  • 720p Video recorder
  • Native APP2SD
  • App Sharing
  • Car Panel
  • Plurk
  • Torcia
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • ..and much more!
How to flash DJDroid v1.0-R1 BETA:

The installation procedure of this Rom requires 2 steps:
  1. Rom installation
  2. Radio installation
Prerequisites:
  • Rooted phone
  • Koush Fakeflash installed on SD (see here)
Step 1 - Rom Installation
  • a. Enter recovery (press volume down then - keeping it pressed - press power button) and make all the WIPES available, with the procedure you like the most.
  • b. After WIPES have been done, use Fakeflash to install ROM file on your SD card.
After installation procedure is over, reboot your phone (first reboot will take some time to complete, do nothing meanwhile).
After first boot, complete first time phone configuration skipping all unnecessary steps (like network, accounts and the like - you will have time setup everything later on).
  • Shut down the phone.
Step 2 - Radio Installation
  • Switch on the phone entering recovery (again, volume down + power)
  • Use fakeflash to make all wipes available, and when you are done, install file on sd card: RadioUpdate.zip. The install will be blazingly fast (less than 3 seconds).
  • Using back button, go to main menu and reboot your phone.
At this point, slowly and gently lean your phone on a flat surface (an altar would be an excellent choice) and start praying (it always helps...), while imagining our grinning faces......
Your device will execute several operations, and reboot more than once.
Do NEVER TOUCH it - NEVER.
If you find yourself alone, riding in the green fields with the sun on your face, and you phone boots into Sense, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you're already done with the installation!
On the other side, if you find yourself alone, and also twelve sexually aroused virgins appear around you, do not be troubled. For you didn't follow the procedure and your phone is already dead....
At this point, you can follow the normal setup procedure as you wish.
P.S.:
A little gift: among the programs, you will find an app which can allow you to choose where to install your APKs!!! BIG thanks to JD82 for this APK!

Know issue:
  • There are no wallpapers
  • Some times the geolocalization could not work well
  • It's possible that some times the device reboot for unknown reasons

XML File Confirms HTC Mondrian and Mozart Running Windows Phone 7 OS

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

Conflipper, the man known for his ROMs has come across some interesting information regarding HTC phones and Windows Phone 7. He has come across links to HTC's official MMS specs page for both the HTC Mondrian and HTC Mozart, both confirmed to be running Windows Phone 7 by the browser ID which can be found listed as "Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile 7." The HTC Mondrian's XML can be found here and the HTC Mozart's XML can be found here. The MMS info doesn't reveal too much, except that both devices will have WVGA screens and both are slates without keyboards. the XML also refers to supported Bluetooth profiles, A2DP, Object push, and of course various hands-free profiles. Unlike the iPhone, Windows Phone 7 is said to support A2DP and MMS at launch. Although Windows Mobile is the main aspect of these handset releases, there should be at least 6 handsets minimum released by the end of the year running Windows Phone 7, so stay tuned for more info by following us on Twitter and/or subscribing to our RSS feeds.

HTC "Gold" With Windows Phone 7 Rumored To Release In November

An online phone comparison site Omio, said they got the scoop on some key UK handsets that are set to debut in the second half of 2010. Supposedly the news is a fresh leak from an unspecified UK retiler, the roadmap contains info on phones such as the HTC Vision, being released next to the previously unheard of HTC Ace all arriving alongside the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 in October, while November will be the month HTC's first Windows Phone 7 device will be released together with the QWERTY-blessed Nokia E7 and Samsung i8700 Cetus.

Other informtion released included the Nokia E7 which is probably the QWERTY equipped Symbian^3 smartphone that we have been hearing of and that has been labeled the N9 or the N8-001/N8-002 by some. This phone has an aluminum body, like the N8 does, together with a tilting AMOLED touchscreen. Slotting into the Eseries line-up would have made far more sense given Nokia's move away from Symbian^3 in their Nseries devices.

As for the Windows Phone 7 HTC phone, the device is tipped off to be the HTC gold. Although there are no details as to specs at this point many people are excited. The HTC Vision is the phone whose info was leaked earlier this week and nobody seems to know what the HTC Ace is. Finally, Samsung's i8700 Cetus is similarly mysterious but te name suggests that it runs the company's wave-themed bada OS.

Omio says they are 100 percent sure of the source and time will definitely help confirm that pretty soon. It is already July as of right now so the first of the handsets should already be on route to be released soon. More information can be found including the Nokia E5-00, Nokia X6 8GB, Samsung i5500, Sony Ericsson W20, BlackBerry Curve 9300, Nokia X2, Sony Ericsson Hazel and Yendo, and the Nokia N8 at Omio's blog. Are you excited about any of the new phones that are said to be coming out?

Developers Bring 720p Video Recording To HTC Desire With Android Froyo 2.2

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

Recently, two ROM developers by the names of Maja and udK over at the XDA-developers have ported Froyo to the Desire and enabled 720p video recording. The ROM (v 1.0) isn't quite ready for mass consumption yet, it is still in testing (v0.3 is available for now). Still it is definitely something to look forward to and we'll be sure to update everyone once the Froyo / 720p ROM is released.

The phone itself is very excellent but having the support of ROM developers that continue to unlock more features for them makes it invaluable. Check out the video below for some footage:

Gain Root Access To HTC EVO 4G [UPDATED]

The latest OTA update for the EVO (which recently patched the vulnerability that previously enabled root) has already been cracked. It uses Adobe's Flash Config page to gain entry to the system configuration. The full instructions aren't all that tricky and as we have said it before, we long as you read the instructions first, you should have no problem. If you haven't rooted before, it certainly is worth considering. There are a number of benefits and having a rooted phone is well worth it.

Well, isn’t this interesting – the latest OTA update for the EVO (which patched the vulnerability that previously enabled root) has been cracked. The interesting part? It uses Adobe’s Flash Config page to gain entry to the system config.

The full instructions aren’t all that tricky, and as we’ve said before, as long as you read the instructions first, you shouldn’t have an issue. If you haven’t rooted before, it’s certainly worth considering. The benefits are numerous, and having rooted a phone for the first time myself just a month ago, I can attest that it’s well worth it.

How To Gain Root Access To HTC EVO 4G [UPDATED]:

You can check out the video tutorial and full instructions:

Make sure you have adb ready to go and know how to get into adb shell. You must use the EVO browser to perform these steps. If these steps don’t work, use recovery to wipe your phone and start fresh (you will lose all of your data on the phone)

1. Unzip the files into a directory somewhere on your computer

2. Put the files into the root of your sdcard (mount the EVO as a disk drive)

3. Unmount your phone

4. Run "adb shell" and start part1 on your phone:

Code:

sh /sdcard/part1

5. If the script says to power down, hold your power button and turn off your phone, then turn it back on.

6. When it starts up it will ask you to open the EVO browser. open your EVO browser to http://bit.ly/ad0pRn

7. When it asks you to, refresh the EVO browser on the same page

8. Reboot your phone with "adb reboot"

9. Run adb shell as soon as you can (when the HTC logo is still showing). You need to be fast. If you get "error: device not found", try again.

Code:

adb shell /data/local/part2

10. It should print after part2 finished:

Code:

crw-rw-rw- root root 90, 2 2010-07-05 19:37 mtd1

11. When your phone finished booting, flash toastcfh’s mtd-eng.img to misc:

Code:

cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/local/flash_image
chmod 755 /data/local/flash_image
/data/local/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img

12. Now flash the Engineering SPL with toastcfh’s post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701835

HTC Vision: Full-QWERTY Android Phone Spotted

A Croatian blog, njuskalo.hr seems to have an image that appears to have an HTC Vision in it. HTC Vision is possibly one of HTC's first high-end, full-QWERTY Android offerings, something we don't see much of nowadays. Device specs are still unconfirmed for the most part and extremely low key, however the sources over at njuskalo.hr indicate that the device has a 3.7" touch-screen, 1 GHz processor, and is running Android 2.1. From the image, we can clearly see that the device has a full-QWERTY slide-out keyboard, much like that of the Touch Pro 2, an optical trackpad, and the units apparent use of a SIM card. As of right now, the market does not have many options for a high-quality, full-QWERTY, Android phone so hopefully this one will make it's way to the production line.

HTC HD2 Android and Ubuntu Builds Now Available

As we slowly approach the end of the Windows Mobile handset legacy, some of the Windows handsets have been spotted running open sourced operating systems shortly after their release. With Windows Phone 7 around the corner, the HD2 will surely be one of the last phone spotted running Windows Mobile, but you can extend the life of the phone by installing an OS of your choice between Ubuntu Karmic Koala or Android 2.1 The builds have been made for general consumption thanks to the folks over at XDA developers and installing them is something you should attempt to do at your own risk. Luckily, neither of them touch the phone's internal flash, so you can always just reset the phone to the comfort of Windows Mobile. If you are feeling adventurous then try them out and drop us a comment with your experience.

Note:

* None of the current releases will touch your internal flash. All changes made in Linux are stored inside files on the Storage Card. After a soft reset (press little red button under battery cover) you get back to your WM 6.5 !
* All running windows mobile programs are closed without notice when you boot Linux. Save your documents before running HaRET
* Make sure you have at least a 2.08 radio rom version. If you have an older version you might not be able to boot Linux
* Note that all of this is work in progress. Don't expect a perfectly smooth operating system yet

Ubuntu:

Ubuntu 'Karmic Koala' for HD2 version 0.1

Needs Storage Card with at least 2GB free space. Recommended is a fast Storage Card (Class 4 is ok)
This is intended to be used as a netbook/desktop type setup with keyboard and mouse connected via USB. Check this site for information on how to do this.

Be sure to read included README.txt for install instructions, features and developer information.
Quick instructions: Put the ubuntu directory into the main/root directory of your Storage Card and tap HaRET executable.
password: ubuntu
use shutdown button to stop the system cleanly

Google's Nexus One Gets An Android 2.2 Froyo Update: FRF91

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

Google has been hard at work pushing out updates for it's Android 2.2 Froyo operating system. Earlier this week, Android 2.2 build FRF85 was released, the big update everyone Nexus One got over-the-air. Today, Google has taken it upon themselves to released yet another update, FRF91. This update also seems to be going out OTA but not everyone has been notified as of yet. All the same though, a direct link has been found from Google's site itself so it definitely is legit. Supposedly, this is just security update but no official word on it yet. If you manage to find anything, drop us a comment below!

Android 3.0 Codename Gingerbread Being Prepped For Tablets

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

Information is being leaked about Android 3.0, which is codenamed Gingerbread. From various previous leaks, it was already revealed that the release of the next major version of the OS was planned for Q4 2010. The details that recently emerged indicate that the release could be in October and might be boosting the minimum required hardware specifications. According to Eldar Murtazin, a blogger for Mobile Review, the new version will require a 1 GHz CPU and 512 MB of RAM and will also be bringing support for a screen resolution of 1280 x 760 for devices with displays larger than 4 inches. The screen resolution makes it a more compelling choice for tablet-sized devices which might be what Google is trying to push more. Several hardware makers have already created Android tablet prototypes with high-resolution screens by tweaking the platforms themselves.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Google is planning a major user interface overhaul for Gingerbread to reduce the need for third-party user interface customizations, such as HTC Sense and Motoblur. Google might take this opportunity to make sure that is new UI will scale up well for tablet devices as well. Intel's recent involvement in an official x86 port of the platform is also evidence that Google plans on pushing Android onto tablets. Intel still currently supports MeeGo for tablets rather than Android, but improvements to Android's x86 suport could still simplify matters for OEMs who want to pair Android with Atom in tablet-like devices.

More leaked information also indicates that while working on Gingerbread, Google plans to continually work on Android 2.2 (Froyo) for the foreseeable future as well so they can maintain it in parallel with 3.0. The purpose of keeping up to date with both is to ensure that 2.2 is still available for lower-end devices that don't meet the high requirements they plan on imposing for Android 3.0. This idea is similar to that of Nokia's strategy of using MeeGo on smartphones and Symbian for less expensive mass-market Internet-enabled phones. Amidst all this information acquired from leaks, its surprising to see Google's lack of any official confirmation. Kind of strange that developers and fanboys rely on leaks and rumors to get news for what is supposedly an "open" platform but we still have high hopes from Google.

HTC EVO 4G Updates Back Online; Bricking Problems Resolved

The previously pulled update is now back out and still promises a handful of fixes for WiFi, Exchange, and battery life. Still no Froyo but either way, its good to know that the update is back out with less brick than before. Just to clarify as well, if you have already updated and saw no issue, then this update can be ignored, the only change here is that after attempting to apply the update multiple times, you won't kill your phone.

Sprint Stops Evo 4G Updates Due To Reports Of Bricking

There has been a little bit of a complaint with the latest Evo 4G update which has resulted numerous people finding their smartphone becoming unusable. Aside from the expected rooted handsets having their predictable woes with the new official software, some users have found that applying the update twice bricked their phones, even those on a stock OS. Pretty worrysome for those who shelled out the money for this beast of a phone, especially because you can check for updates after a successful install gives you the option to apply it all over again. Sprint and HTC have acted quickly to pull the OTA (over-the-air) update off and they both promised to restore it as soon as the issue has been ironed out. Here is what two companies had to say:
While the vast majority of consumers successfully downloaded and installed the most recent HTC EVO 4G software update, we have received a handful of reports from customers having some issues with the update. In light of this, HTC and Sprint have decided to temporarily halt distribution of this software release until we can investigate further. We expect to be able to resume software updates shortly.
For now all we can do is sit and wait and hope that everything gets fixed soon, otherwise we will be left with several unsatisfied customers.

The rumor mill may have been early, but it's about to be proven correct - says Bloomberg.

It appears that Verizon, the largest U.S. mobile-phone company, will at long last finally introduce coverage for Apple's iPhone next year - possibly as early as January. Bloomberg is reporting from two familiar sources in the know (not something a major, credible news source like Bloomberg does very often) that AT&T's exclusive hold on the iPhone is effectively over.

Verizon Wireless, now laboring to roll out a high-speed fourth-generation network, is expected to include the iPhone in its big new product unveiling in January at the Consumer Electronics Show. Verizon's network coverage for the iPhone 4 will dramatically improve the user experience for both AT&T and Verizon iPhone customers, as the network expansion will significantly reduce the overwhelming data burdens presently incumbent on AT&T, the sole carrier of the iPhone in the US.

UBS AG analyst John Hodulik tells Bloomberg that Apple is going to drastically "increase the number of devices it sells in the US when exclusivity at AT&T ends. It’s hard to ignore the quality issues that AT&T has faced.” For now, spokespersons at Apple, AT&T, and Verizon are not commenting on the Bloomberg report, which for the most part, is presenting the iPhone's arrival on the Verizon network as fact rather than a mere possibility.

Of course, some conspiracy theorists are already speculating that the "leak" may be intentional by Verizon as a means to sway some folks to hold off on upgrading to the iPhone 4 and, consequently, extending their love-hate relationship with AT&T for another twenty-four months. As Verizon looks to ramp up its competitive efforts in the smartphone marketplace in the coming months, it isn't impossible to fathom the carrier pulling such a clever stunt.

Sprint Releases HTC Evo 4G OTA Update

Earlier today, Sprint released an over-the-air Android software update to the HTC Evo 4G. The update is labeled as version 1.47.651.1 and is 21.43MB. It is mainly a few bug fixes and improvements upon existing features. Many users have reported to have "enhanced" WiFi that works better and notice faster load times and more responsiveness on the phone's home screen. Others seemed to notice nothing different and and reported having certain customized settings being reset, such as wallpapers. If you own an HTC Evo 4G and have upgraded, let us know your experience post-update as opposed to before by dropping us comment below!
