TinyUmbrella Updated To 4.01.01; Supports iOS 4.0.1 and iPad 3.2.1

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

Notcom, the dev behind TinyUmbrella has released yet another updated, and her released TinyUmbrella 4.01.01 for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux OS. TinyUmbrella 4.01.01 comes with iOS 4.0.1 and iPad 3.2.1 iOS support. TinyUmbrella let you save SHSH blobs (necessary for restoring older firmware) for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. More details on TinyUmbrella can be found here.

Important (Developer Notes):

I’ve received many instances where folks would get some error message about WinSock or jvm_bind etc. This is likely due to a firewall restriction on your machine. You may need to disable your firewall and/or Anti virus software because I do the following:
  1. Load an unrelated library (iTunesMobileDevice.dll)
  2. Edit your hosts file (some anti virus software does not like this)
  3. Start a server accepting connections on port 80
  4. Write a file named (hosts.umbrella) next to your hosts file saving your original hosts file so you have a permanent backup before any of my changes (hosts.umbrella never gets overwritten)
These things raise flags with some very paranoid AV software.

TinyUmbrella Updated To Version 4.00.80, Offers Lots Of New Features

The developer behind TinyUmbrella, NotCom released an updated TinyUmbrella 4.00.80 for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The new version, Tiny Umbrella 4.00.80 now supports multiple concurrent devices and also comes with improved performance and console messages. It now also features a link to locate the saved SHSH blobs. Check out what's new in TinyUmbrella and download the software below.

New Features in TinyUmbrella 4.00.80

  • TinyUmbrella now has support for multiple concurrent devices. Now when you plug in more than one device, each device will show up in a combo box. You can select the device and the currently selected device’s ECID will populate in the ECID field and the proper default firmware will be selected appropriate to the device.

  • A few new features to the underlying framework: the links that show up in the console are now clickable. (This means when you pastebin your log file you can click on the link and it’ll open in your default browser).

  • When you save your shsh file you will see a ‘Click here to Open’ link that, when clicked, will open Finder (OSX) or Explorer (WIN) to the SHSH file saved. No more whining about where the files are saved. (Not that any of you have any reason to tinker with the files outside of backing up the entire directory right?)

  • The list of files that show up in the console when you ‘Display SHSH‘ are also clickable and will reveal themselves in Finder/Explorer as well.

  • Some performance tweaks (so the app should be slightly faster).

  • added some much needed feedback to the console when saving SHSHs. The messages are quite verbose and explain much more plainly the situation if you are unable to get SHSHs because your device is ‘not eligible’.

  • Working on some more features for future releases.

[How To] Jailbreak iOS 4 iPodTouch 2G (MC) With Sn0wBreeze 1.7

Download RealPlayer SP for FREE

Sn0wbreeze 1.7 utility allows jailbreaking for the iPodTouch 2G (MC) on iOS 4.0 and is available for download. With this release, you can jailbreak iPodTouch 2G (MC) if it's on OS 3.1.2 or you've SHSH blobs saved for OS 3.1.2. In order to create a custom iOS 4 and go for 4.0 firmware successfully you have to be on OS 3.1.2+ jailbroken.

IMPORTANT:

  • iPhone 3GS with New BootRom, iPod Touch 3G, 2G (MC) users MUST be on firmware 3.1.2 or have SHSH blobs saved for it (needed for downgrade). Otherwise you’re still out of Luck. The exploit used in this hack has been patched in OS 3.1.3 so firmware 3.1.2 is a MUST.
  • If you’re not on 3.1.2 firmware or don’t have saved SHSH blobs for it, you’ll have to wait for the Spirit jailbreak update which is almost ready. I think they are waiting for the next firmware update (iOS 4.1 or iOS 4.01).
  • For iPhone 3GS (New BootRom), iPod Touch 3G, 2G (MC) users it’s a Tethered jailbreak. For those who don’t know, a tethered jailbreak device once turned off/Reboot/run out of battery, you need to connect it to computer and execute a tool to boot up the device.
  • Once jailbroken then you can unlock iPhone iOS 4 with UltraSn0w.
  • This guide is NOT for regular Windows users. So, proceed with precaution and follow the guide at your own risk. Let’s jailbreak iPod Touch 2G (MC) iOS 4 with Sn0wBreeze 1.7 and iBooty + Payload Pwner.

Sn0wBreeze 1.7 Supports:

  • iPod Touch 2G (MC)
  • iPod Touch 3G only if running firmware 3.1.2 and/or you have SHSH blobs for 3.1.2 (needed for downgrade)
  • iPhone 3GS only if running firmware 3.1.2 and/or you have SHSH blobs for 3.1.2 (needed for downgrade)

How To Jailbreak iOS 4 iPodTouch 2G (MC):

Required:

STEP 1 : Pwning iBoot

  1. Download this easy tool here — Payload Pwner-r5 // It will help you create the payload.
  2. Extract it to a directory and run Pwner.exe
**Save the Payload where iBooty is.**

STEP 2 : Making a Custom IPSW

  1. Download sn0wbreeze V1.7 from here
  2. USE EXPERT MODE!
  3. In General, Checkmark “Disable NOR Flash” <– THIS IS ESSENTIAL!!!!
  4. Build it. It will be on your Desktop.

**CUSTOM BOOT LOGOS THAT ARE MADE IN sn0wbreeze WILL NOT WORK ON NEW BOOTROMS!**

**Mac Users : PwnageTool does not have this option. I don’t think it will ever be in there. Use a Windows Virtual Machine or friends PC to create your firmware.**

STEP 3: iBooty Prep.

Most of you know of the utility “iBooty” that I made for Aki_nG. It will work as long as you place all of the correct files there.
  1. Download iBooty GUI here — iBooty V1.5 and Extract it.
  2. Extract your Custom IPSW created by sn0wbreeze with 7-Zip or another un-archiver.
  3. Grab the kernelcache and bring it into the same folder as ibooty.
  4. Also grab iBEC from the folder “Firmware\dfu”.
  5. Aswell as DeviceTree from the folder “Firmware\all_flash\all_flash.n88ap.production\DeviceTree.n88ap”
  6. Rename your Kernel 4.0-Custom to “kernel.40″
  7. Rename your iBEC 4.0-Custom to “ibec.40″
  8. Rename your DeviceTree 4.0-Custom to “devtree.40″
Your folder should look like this:
- iboot.payload <– Created with Payload Pwner.
- devtree.40 <– Grabbed from Custom IPSW made by sn0wbreeze.
- ibec.40 <– Created with Payload Pwner.
- bspatch.exe <– Comes with iBooty.
- iBooty.exe <– Comes with iBooty.
- kernel.40 <– Grab from Custom IPSW made by sn0wbreeze.
- sn0w.img3 <– Comes with iBooty.
- wait.img3 <– Comes with iBooty.

STEP 4: Restoring to 4.0 + Booting

*Make sure your are on 3.1.2 when doing this*
  1. Run iBooty and Select “Prepare Device for Custom Firmware“. Run the Process and if you see the image, you can proceed!
  2. Now open iTunes and restore to the custom ipsw.
**When done, your device will go into recovery mode. It won’t boot.**

STEP 5 : Booting

Just Re-Run iBooty and select “Boot It”. If all goes well it will boot!

Enjoy! Hopefully iH8Sn0w can get a tool out there that will make all of this much easier.

If you have an iPhone 3GS old BootRom, you can jailbreak using Sn0wBreeze 1.6, PwnageTool 4 and then unlock iOS 4 on baseband 05.12.01, Baseband 05.13.04 and 05.11.07 using UltraSn0w 0.93.

To jailbreak iPhone 3Gs new bootrom, you can follow the guide here. And you are all set to enjoy! Hopefully the dev, iH8Sn0w can get a tool out there that will make all of this much easier.

Next Gen iPod Touch Coming This September; Brings 5MP Camera + Facetime

Earlier today, a leading UK retailer slipped some details on what it expects from the next-gen iPod Touch and the iPhone 4 holds many of the clues. According to John Lewis who says "noises we're hearing from suppliers," the next-gen device will come equipped with a 5-megapixel camera, a front-facing camera, an LED flash, and the capacity to capture video in HD (720p probably), as well as including FaceTime Wi-FI video chat. With support for iOS 4 (which should also be hitting the iPad relatively soon), the next gen iPod Touch will offer the same movement sensors as the iPhone 4. Everything seems pretty reasonable and pretty accurate as games and other titles designed to take advantage of the iPhone's new accelerometer and gyroscope will be hitting the App Store, requiring the hardware to be able to support the features to be a contender.

This whole rumor suggests that the device will probably be powered by the A4 processor that Apple utilizes in it's iPad and iPhone 4 as well. With the iTunes cloud rumor in the air, the possibility of the iPod Touch supporting 3G is still there but highly doubtful at the same time as it would imply support for VoIP and we aren't sure Apple wants to hurt their iPhone sales. That being said, this suggests that some elements of portability will exist in the iTunes cloud service, so that users can carry some tracks with them when their devices are offline (a common feature found in Spotify, MOG, and others). Apple's next music event is probably going to be held in time for the holiday shopping season, most likely early September. Will iOS-enabled Apple TV also make an appearance? Only time will tell.

Stay tuned for more info on the topic by following us on Twitter and/or subscribing to our RSS feeds.

Cross Platform Developers for Both iOS and Android Increase

Protect Your Privacy

Usually a number of raw apps are considered in mobile OS comparisons, but this time developers that are working behind the scenes are being compared. AppStore HQ today have gone through their dev directory and claimed to to compile a complete listing of all 55,000+ coders whose work is currently available for consumption in the Apple App Store and the Android Market. They were each put in a neat pile of Apple, Google, and Apple + Google programmers (Gapple). After seeing the chart put together, it is pretty visible to see that single-platform development is the norm (with Apple having more developers), but AppStore HQ also provides a list of some of the most well known and funded apps doing the cross-platform developing. The company suggests that a movement is on its way, one that makes software available for both sets of users. VentureBeat, another company has extrapolated the following numbers from the chart:
  • 43,185, or 80 percent, develop solely for Apple’s iOS.

[How To] Add Fancy Symbols To iOS 4 Folder Names

Folders are one of the major new features introduced in iOS 4 and they help you keep the apps organized and reduce the clutter on your iPhone's home screen. It's pretty neat how the folder is automatically assigned a name based on the iPhone apps inside it. If that isn't good enough for some of you folks, the people over at iPhone J.D have figured out a way to assign fancy symbols to a folder name using Glyphboard. Glyphboard is an iPhone web app developed by Neven Mrgan and it includes 48 fancy symbols that can be copied and pasted anywhere, including folder names.

How To Add Fancy Symbols To iOS 4 Folder Names:

  • All you need to do is, point your iPhone’s Safari browser to http://mrgan.com/gb/ to launch the Glyphboard web app.

  • Then tap on the + button and choose Add to Home Screen.

  • Exit iPhone Safari and tap on the Glyphboard on your iPhone’s home screen.

  • To select one of the 48 fancy symbols , tap and hold on a symbol to select and then tap on the Copy button.

  • If you want to create a folder with multiple symbols then you can use the scratchboard at the top to copy multiple symbols.

  • You can then use the symbols copied to iPhone’s clipboard to assign it to folder names by pasting it.

Upcoming Sn0wBreeze Update To Jailbreak iPhone 3GS (New Bootrom) On iOS4

Try SugarSync Free!

iH8Sn0w recently announced that he has managed to jailbreak iPhone 3GS with the new BootRom on iOS4 firmware with Sn0wBreeze. He has shared a video demo of the iPhone 3GS with the new BootRom running iOS4 with an unreleased version of Sn0wBreeze jailbreak utility.

As per a tweet from iH8Sn0w about the iPhone 3GS new BootRom jailbreak with Sn0wBreeze:
The cool video here — http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWc_d2C5TME // Is indeed real, but requires the 3.1.2 SHSH blobs.

and Please don’t ask for a release on this. I’m not planning on it.

Alright… If anyone has their 3.1.2 SHSH blobs, NOT 3.1.3. Then I’ll see if I can produce a tool that will do this job…

NOTE:

  • You MUST have SHSH blobs saved for OS 3.1.2. The exploit used in this upcoming Sn0wBreeze hack has been patched in OS 3.1.3 so firmware 3.1.2 is a MUST.
  • We assume that it’ll be possible to jailbreak iPod Touch 3G iOS 4 as well provided that you’ve SHSH for 3.1.2 saved but there’s no word from iH8Sn0w on this.
  • It’s a tethered jailbreak. For those who don’t know, a tethered jailbreak device once turned off/Reboot/run out of battery, you need to connect it to computer and execute a tool to boot up the device.
  • There is no release date announced yet.

Jailbreak iPhone 3GS (New BootRom) On iOS 4:

How to save SHSH Blobs:

If you have an iPhone 3GS with the old BootRom, you can jailbreak using Sn0wBreeze 1.6.2, or PwnageTool 4.0.1 and then unlock iOS 4 on any baseband using UltraSn0w 0.93.

TinyUmbrella Updated; Now Saves SHSH Blobs For iPhone 4

TinyUmbrella has been updated to 4.00.49 and can now save SHSH blobs for iPhone 4 running iOS 4.0. Saving iPhone 4 SHSH blobs for iOS 4.0 is important because when Apple releases iOS 4.0.01 firmware for iPhone 4, you won’t be able to downgrade to 4.0 unless you have SHSH blobs for iOS 4.

Since there is no official jailbreak out for iPhone 4 yet, saving SHSH blobs via Cydia's "Make My Life Easier" option is not available yet for iPhone 4 users. Here is when TinyUmbrella comes in handy. See the important information below before proceeding:

IMPORTANT:

  • Apple stops signing firmware SHSH once a new firmware is out. Once Apple has stopped signing firmware SHSH requests for a firmware version there is no way to get your SHSH for that particular version.
  • Device does NOT need to be Jailbroken in order to save SHSH blobs with TinyUmbrella.
  • Your iPhone 4 MUST be connected to the computer to save shsh blobs. For other devices, you can also save SHSH blobs without connecting the device simply by providing ECID.
  • If you desire to restore your iPhone 4 to iOS 4, make sure you uninstall Wi-Fi Sync before trying to do so. I’ve apparently had the same issue a few other folks had.
  • So far restores on the iPhone4 are not perfect. They error out locally but the restore does complete – it just needs to be helped along. (Much like downgrades where the baseband update fails). Hopefully this will all be resolved soon.
  • You can also save ECID SHSH blobs for iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G and iPod Touch 2G (MC).
  • Your files are saved in:

    • MAC
      /Users//.shsh
      ex: /Users/semaphore/.shsh
    • WINDOWS XP
      <Main Drive>:\Documents and Settings\\.shsh
      ex: C:\Documents and Settings\semaphore\.shsh
    • WINDOWS 7
      <Main Drive>:\Users\\.shsh
      ex: C:\Users\semaphore\.shsh

[How To] Save SHSH Blobs for iOS 4 Firmware

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

Notcom recently released TinyUmbrella 4 (a unified version of Firmware Umbrella and TinyTSS) to save SHSH blobs of the iOS 4 firmware.

Firmware Umbrella:

When you try to restore any of the devices listed below to an older firmware, you will quickly come to realize that Apple doesn't allow you to do that. Once you have upgraded, downgrading is usually not an option Apple condones. The way they stop you from doing that is basically by a simple response that iTunes receives when you try to restore to the firmware of your choosing. The firmware for the devices is signed with a unique id (known as ECID) that only your device has. Apple takes the firmware version files and combines them with your ECID and generates a hash that ONLY Apple can generate. iTunes packages the valuable information and sends it to your device. Your device then checks the information and verifies the signature (making sure it came from Apple, as it can't be forged since the encryption is very high). Once the signature matches then the restore process can continue. If it doesn't match, the device raises an error in the restore process and stops. Apple also started the trend of ceasing to sign older firmwares once a new one is out. Firmware Umbrella sends the same exact request that iTunes sends Apple when requesting the signatures for the device to be restored. It saves SHSH signatures that your device receives from the Apple server and allows you to downgrade the OS indefinitely.

TinyTSS:

TinyTSS is a small java app that basically acts as your very own signature service. The app checks if you are allowed to restore to the version you are requesting when iTunes verifies the firmware restore for the devices mentioned below. With TinyTSS alongside with the SHSH blob file(s) obtained from Firmware Umbrella, you will be able to restore to the version of those SHSH files forever.

TinyUmbrella:

Tiny Umbrella is Firmware Umbrella + TinyTSS combined.

TinyUmbrella Supports:

  • iPhone 3GS
  • iPod Touch 3G
  • iPod Touch 2G (with model number MC)

Note:

  • TinyUmbrella can now save iOS 4 SHSH regardless of whether your iDevice is jailbroken.
  • You can save SHSH blobs for iOS 4 even if you’re on OS 3.1.3 or older.
  • iPhone 3G and older devices including iPod Touch (Non-MC) users do not need to save any SHSH blobs.
  • Tested on iTunes 9 and all versions after (up to and including 9.2)

Apple Patents A Haptic Feedback Idea

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple is in the middle of bouncing around ideas for a screen that allows for haptic feedback on its iOS devices. A new patent that was filed this week explains a system of screens on a device designed to not only detect touch and protect the underlying technology but also provide physical feedback in various areas of the screen. As sleek and stylish as the iPhone and iPad screens are, it seems as if they all lack some functions such as typing on a keyboard or hitting buttons in games that call for a little bit more feedback than what the device currently offers. The patent also mentioned giving users a notice for when they've reached a limit (as in scrolling or panning across pictures) or providing clicks on a scroll wheel.

This idea is still unfortunately in the prototype stages and for whatever reason, Apple hasn't included any of this technology in any of the current devices in production. Guesses as to why lead to thinking of power requirements to manufacturing costs. Their interest in haptic feedback does bring some excitement as it could lead to a much richer experience when using Apple products so we hope that it won't be too long to see this idea hit devices that we see on shelves.
