Apple Working On New And Improved MacBook Air And iPod Touch

Click here for the Best Buy Homepage

According to the Taiwan based publication, Digitimes, the next-generation MacBook Air will have an 11-inch screen and an ultra-low voltage (ULV) Intel Core i-series processor. The report claims that Digitimes is getting their information from "upstream component makers" and also echoes increasingly common rumors that the new iPod Touch released this year will have a camera. The report also claims that the refreshed MacBook Air would be produced in relatively few numbers, with only 400,000 units to ship by the end of the year. If the report information turns out to be true, then it would move the MacBook Air to almost netbook size although it'll still have a very significant price premium compared to most ultraportables. Apple's lightest notebook will start at a hefty price for $1,499.

The Digitimes story, with credit going to senior analyst Mingchi Kuo claims that the new MacBook Air will be thinner, lighter, and supposedly also have a ULV Intel CPU possibly the Core i5-560UM). Other rumors such as a 3G chip and more SSD options were not mentioned in the report. The MacBook Air has always been at a strange position in Apple's lineup since it's performance is like that of low-end MacBooks but the device as a whole is priced near the MacBook Pro range. It has done pretty well but is far outsold by the other more mainstream models. Many analysts have been challenging Apple for years to try and come out with a netbook but the company seems to ignore the requests. With a lower cost chip, Apple could easily reduce the price somewhat, but it is still very unlikely to see Apple netbooks priced below $500.

Mingchi Kuo also claims that the fourth generation iPod Touch will have Apple's A4 processor and a 3 megapixel camera. Other rumors have said that the Touch will have two cameras, one with a front-facing sensor, allowing FaceTime support. Kuo didn't refer to any second camera in his report though the next generation iPod Touch is expected in August or September when Apple has traditionally refreshed the iPod line.

TinyUmbrella Updated To Version 4.00.80, Offers Lots Of New Features

The developer behind TinyUmbrella, NotCom released an updated TinyUmbrella 4.00.80 for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The new version, Tiny Umbrella 4.00.80 now supports multiple concurrent devices and also comes with improved performance and console messages. It now also features a link to locate the saved SHSH blobs. Check out what's new in TinyUmbrella and download the software below.

    New Features in TinyUmbrella 4.00.80

    • TinyUmbrella now has support for multiple concurrent devices. Now when you plug in more than one device, each device will show up in a combo box. You can select the device and the currently selected device’s ECID will populate in the ECID field and the proper default firmware will be selected appropriate to the device.

    • A few new features to the underlying framework: the links that show up in the console are now clickable. (This means when you pastebin your log file you can click on the link and it’ll open in your default browser).

    • When you save your shsh file you will see a ‘Click here to Open’ link that, when clicked, will open Finder (OSX) or Explorer (WIN) to the SHSH file saved. No more whining about where the files are saved. (Not that any of you have any reason to tinker with the files outside of backing up the entire directory right?)

    • The list of files that show up in the console when you ‘Display SHSH‘ are also clickable and will reveal themselves in Finder/Explorer as well.

    • Some performance tweaks (so the app should be slightly faster).

    • added some much needed feedback to the console when saving SHSHs. The messages are quite verbose and explain much more plainly the situation if you are unable to get SHSHs because your device is ‘not eligible’.

    • Working on some more features for future releases.

[How To] Save SHSH Blobs for iOS 4 Firmware

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

Notcom recently released TinyUmbrella 4 (a unified version of Firmware Umbrella and TinyTSS) to save SHSH blobs of the iOS 4 firmware.

    Firmware Umbrella:

When you try to restore any of the devices listed below to an older firmware, you will quickly come to realize that Apple doesn't allow you to do that. Once you have upgraded, downgrading is usually not an option Apple condones. The way they stop you from doing that is basically by a simple response that iTunes receives when you try to restore to the firmware of your choosing. The firmware for the devices is signed with a unique id (known as ECID) that only your device has. Apple takes the firmware version files and combines them with your ECID and generates a hash that ONLY Apple can generate. iTunes packages the valuable information and sends it to your device. Your device then checks the information and verifies the signature (making sure it came from Apple, as it can't be forged since the encryption is very high). Once the signature matches then the restore process can continue. If it doesn't match, the device raises an error in the restore process and stops. Apple also started the trend of ceasing to sign older firmwares once a new one is out. Firmware Umbrella sends the same exact request that iTunes sends Apple when requesting the signatures for the device to be restored. It saves SHSH signatures that your device receives from the Apple server and allows you to downgrade the OS indefinitely.

    TinyTSS:

TinyTSS is a small java app that basically acts as your very own signature service. The app checks if you are allowed to restore to the version you are requesting when iTunes verifies the firmware restore for the devices mentioned below. With TinyTSS alongside with the SHSH blob file(s) obtained from Firmware Umbrella, you will be able to restore to the version of those SHSH files forever.

    TinyUmbrella:

Tiny Umbrella is Firmware Umbrella + TinyTSS combined.

    TinyUmbrella Supports:

    • iPhone 3GS
    • iPod Touch 3G
    • iPod Touch 2G (with model number MC)

    Note:

    • TinyUmbrella can now save iOS 4 SHSH regardless of whether your iDevice is jailbroken.
    • You can save SHSH blobs for iOS 4 even if you’re on OS 3.1.3 or older.
    • iPhone 3G and older devices including iPod Touch (Non-MC) users do not need to save any SHSH blobs.
    • Tested on iTunes 9 and all versions after (up to and including 9.2)

Thieves Targeting Apple Devices For Quick Cash

Everyone knows that thieves have a keen eye for Apple product's, especially after seeing those white earbuds which scream "I am carrying an expensive Apple device, mug me!" iPhones and iPods were too hard for many to resist and now the iPads are joining the ranks. The New York Post reports that the West Side Apple Stoer was robbed of iPads twice in the last week. Both times, thieves snagged boxed iPads as they were being unloaded from a delivery truck in broad daylight, picking up as many as five at a time while the driver was looking away and sprinting from the scene shortly after.

We know that the iPad is a hot product from all the sales figures announced. Employees at the store have increased their security to prevent future encounters from occurring but monitoring shipments is usually very tricky, as the employees dont know when the new iPads or other Apple products will arrive. Everyone who walks around and uses Apple products often should keep an eye out and be aware of their surroundings to make sure their iDevice never gets stolen.

New Parental Controls With McAfee Family Protection App

    Protect Your Privacy

Making sure to keep an eye on your child's Internet access has always been a difficult task and it is only getting harder with more and more kids owning mobile devices such as iPhones and iPod Touches. Fortunately McAfee's new McAfee Family Protection for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad lets parents control and monitor how their kids access the Internet on their mobile gadgets. The McAfee Family Protection is a $20 Web browser app with a number of parental control features built-in. In order for the app to be effective, parents must disable the Safari app on their children's iPhone by accessing the iPhone's Restrictions settings.

The app offers standard Website and search filtering and it automatically blocks age-inappropriate sites, such as known pornography sites. For the extra-concerned parent, the program includes location-tracking for devices that are GPS equipped, so you can be aware of your child's location whenever he or she is accessing the Internet. Parents can also view statistics such as visited websites and access times, and give or grant access to websites of their liking. They can even go as far as remotely disabling all web browsing if need be. Another popular feature is the ability to block mobile Internet usage only during hours one may consider inappropriate, so you can make sure your child isn't surfing the Internet on sites such as Facebook during school or past bedtime. The app release coincides with the publishing of mcAfee's study on teen online behavior called "The Secret Lives of Teens."

Their study had revealed that nearly half of the teens who participated shared personal information with strangers while online. In addition, 28 percent of the kids updated their status on social networking sites including their physical location (dangerous combination for teens who communicate with strangers.) Furthermore, 65 percent of students revealed that they used their mobile devices while in school. Given these facts, now may be an even better time to make sure that your children are using the Internet safely, whether it is mobile or not.

GeoHot Works On New Exploit of All Exploits "Pwned4Life"

To clarify from the start, this isn't a release of any sort but rather news on an upcoming release. Although we've heard a lot about jailbreaking from several different hackers, Geohot has been rather quiet. This doesn't mean that he isn't working on anything. George Hotz (Geohot) has currently been in France for the Nuit Du Hack conference. An event started in 2003 by Hackerz Voice team, and inspired by world famous DEF CON, "Nuit Du Hack" is one of the oldest French underground hacking conferences to date.

During one of the "talks" held during the conference, George gave a presentation in which he discussed the discovery of his newest bootrom exploit, which by the sounds of it, can eventually jailbreak or "pwn" every iPhone and iPod Touch available, including the iPhone 4. It sounds like something that will be usable over and over again for any new iPhone devices that are released in the future. The name he has given to this new project of his is "pwned4life".

    Mozy Remote Backup. Free.Automatic.Secure.

Keep an eye out on the news as we suspect this new tool to be released in the upcoming future. As always you can stay tuned for information on jailbreaking and the latest hack scene by following us on Twitter and/or subscribing to our RSS feeds.

"Find My iPhone" App Hits iTunes

Apple recently launched its Find My iPhone app on the iTunes App Store, a service which was previously limited to MobileMe's web interface. The App does what the title claims, it will help you find your iPhone (also iPad or iPod Touch) if you lose it or if it gets stolen. This app doesn't go on the lost / stolen device (how would you use it if your device was lost/stolen?) but rather on a different iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, whether its yours or somebody else's. Worried owners login with their MobileMe account to map the missing iDevice and remotely lock the device or wipe the data on it. The app can only be installed on versions 3.1.3 or later devices and is currently available for free. If one of you unfortunate people ends up using it or just test it out, let us know your thoughts by dropping a comment below.

US Copyright Office To Define The State of iPhone Jailbreak

Any day now the U.S Copyright Office and the Librarian of Congress are due to rule whether the iPhone jailbreaking should be exempted from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The scoop on whats going on all started about eighteen months ago when the Electronic Frontier Foundation asked regulators to add jailbreaking to a list of explicit exemptions to the DMCA's anti-circumvention provisions. For those of you who don't already know, jailbreaking is when you hack the phone's OS to allow it to run any app on the phone, including apps not authorized by Apple. When last reviewed three years ago, regulators approved six exemptions, including the ability to unlock your phone to change carriers. Apple and it's very closed business model has been enjoying since 2007, when the iPhone debuted. Apple says its unlawful to jailbreak and not take legal action against the millions who have jailbroken their phones and used the underground app store, Cydia. The company doesn't deny tha the closed marketplace is what made the success of the iPhone possible, and sold more than three billion apps.

The EEF's Fred von Lohmann said that allowing jailbreaking world create an app gold rush, and bring the unauthorized app market to the mainstream. So what's this all about? Every three years, regulators look into proposed exemptions to the DMCA, passed in 1998. The act would forbid circumventing encryption technology to copy or modify copyrighted works. In this case, Apple says the DMCA protects the encryption built into the bootloader that starts up the iPhone OS operating system. Apple declined to be interviewed for the story but in an April security bulletin, it said "Unauthorized modification of iPhone OS has been a major source of instability, disruption fo services, and other issues."

In the video below, von Lohmann explains why EFF made the jailbreaking request to government regulators:
