Apple's Friday press conference, now dubbed Antennagate conference has definitely angered many, including several rival handset manufacturers. Some of the manufacturers such as Nokia and RIM have released an official response already towards Apple's statements but not all of the companies are taking Cupertino's words and opinions to heart. HTC's Droid Eris was arguably the most affected byt he grip of doom, its bars dropping to zero when held ,but the Taiwanese company's keeping any controversial opinions to itself for now. Instead it simply shared a simple percentage to clear the air.
Apple claimed over 0.55 percent of customers called AppleCare with reception-related complains, HTC's Eric Lin informed Pocket-lint the Droid Eris technical suport rate was only 0.016 percent, nearly thirty-four times lower - although with a seven-month head start, we have to wonder if the Eris sold close to three million by the time Verizon bought the axe down. HTC's approach is definitely different from that of the other companies brought into the mix.
Starting out directly by aiming at the iPhone 4's infamous "Death Grip" situation by kicking off the event with the "iPhone 4 antenna song" music video, Steve Jobs took the stage at Apple's press conference earlier today in Cupertino; promising to answer the longstanding questions about the iPhone 4's antenna dilemma.
"You know, we're not perfect. We know that, you know that. And phones aren't perfect either," Jobs said, after noting the record sales and the popularity of the iPhone 4. "But we want to make all of our users happy. If you don't know that about Apple, you don't know Apple. We love making our users happy. We've been working on this for just 22 days," Jobs said, suggesting that "Antennagate" caught Apple off guard the same way it caught everyone else as well. Jobs said that Apple "first learned that this doesn't just happen to the iPhone. Nokia, Motorola and other phones have this issue..." while citing internal tests (for some reason YouTube clips weren't adequate). He demonstrated how the BlackBerry Bold 9700 and the Samsung Omnia II similarly lose bars when held improperly, basically trying to make it clear that the iPhone 4 wasn't alone in the world of Death Grips.

"We had a reporting error," Steve Jobs said, finally bringing up the algorithmn and showing off the highly advanced $100 million facility in which the iPhone 4 was tested and re-tested over and over again. "We screwed up on our algorithm. Some of these other phones may be too generous. Our choice was to put the correct algorithm in. And we did that with the new update. You'll still see a drop as we haven't figured out a way around the laws of physics yet." He went on to note that "just one half of one percent" of iPhone 4 users have actually complained about the Death Grip, implying that the problem of the media going crazy over the issue was a bigger problem than the antenna issue itself. Comparing it to the iPhone 3GS, Jobs revealed that "in the early days of the iPhone 3GS, return rates were 6%, So for the iPhone 4, you think half the people must be returning their phones with what you read online. Well it's 1.7%, less than a third of the 3GS returns."
Jobs did admit (barely) to not being perfect either, indicating that While Apple believes the iPhone 4 is superior to the 3GS antenna, it actually drops more calls per 100 than the 3GS. "We're being transparent," he said, observing that the exact dropped call data can't be revealed as its within AT&T's discretion to withhold that info from competitors. But... "This is hard data... the iPhone 4 drops less than one additional call per 100 than the 3GS. Less than one." Here is what he said exactly about the issue:
Now when we look at this data, it's hard to escape the conclusion that there is a problem, but that problem is affecting a very small number of users.
So the big question arose: What is Apple going to do to try and resolve the big issue?
Steve Job's answer: iOS 4.0.1 (which was released JUST yesterday) AND.... free bumpers for all!
Here is what he said about the ordeal:
We think this has been so blown out of proportion. It's fun to have a story, but it's not fun on the other side. So here's what we're going to do to make our users happy. The first part is the software update, that fixes the way the bars report and other bugs, that's out now. Second, people said the bumper fixes everything... 'why don't you give everybody a case'? Okay -- we'll give you a free case.

For those of you wondering about what will happen if there aren't enough bumpers, he addressed that issue as well:
We're going to send you a free case. We can't make enough bumpers. No way we can make enough in the quarter. So we're going to source some cases and give you a choice. And if you're not happy, you can bring the phone back. We'll give you a full refund within 30 days. No restocking fee. We want to make everyone happy, and if we can't make you happy we'll give you a full refund.
To top it all off, Jobs mentioned that these cases will be shipped to you and the ability to order one will start late next week. Nearing the end of the conference Jobs mentioned news of the White iPhone 4 being available at the end of July. Hoping that the white iPhone 4 will be the biggest news from now on as opposed to more "Death Grip" situations. According to the Taiwan based publication, Digitimes, the next-generation MacBook Air will have an 11-inch screen and an ultra-low voltage (ULV) Intel Core i-series processor. The report claims that Digitimes is getting their information from "upstream component makers" and also echoes increasingly common rumors that the new iPod Touch released this year will have a camera. The report also claims that the refreshed MacBook Air would be produced in relatively few numbers, with only 400,000 units to ship by the end of the year. If the report information turns out to be true, then it would move the MacBook Air to almost netbook size although it'll still have a very significant price premium compared to most ultraportables. Apple's lightest notebook will start at a hefty price for $1,499.
The Digitimes story, with credit going to senior analyst Mingchi Kuo claims that the new MacBook Air will be thinner, lighter, and supposedly also have a ULV Intel CPU possibly the Core i5-560UM). Other rumors such as a 3G chip and more SSD options were not mentioned in the report. The MacBook Air has always been at a strange position in Apple's lineup since it's performance is like that of low-end MacBooks but the device as a whole is priced near the MacBook Pro range. It has done pretty well but is far outsold by the other more mainstream models. Many analysts have been challenging Apple for years to try and come out with a netbook but the company seems to ignore the requests. With a lower cost chip, Apple could easily reduce the price somewhat, but it is still very unlikely to see Apple netbooks priced below $500.
Mingchi Kuo also claims that the fourth generation iPod Touch will have Apple's A4 processor and a 3 megapixel camera. Other rumors have said that the Touch will have two cameras, one with a front-facing sensor, allowing FaceTime support. Kuo didn't refer to any second camera in his report though the next generation iPod Touch is expected in August or September when Apple has traditionally refreshed the iPod line.
T-Mobile's HSPA+ service should get a major expansion in just ver a week, including a new netbook to match, if a tip this evening is accurate.

In addition to the HSPA+ expansion on July 21st T-Mobile will be launching the new webConnect Rocket 2.0 USB data stick with an “enhanced design” that swivels, so you don’t accidentally snap the thing when it’s plugged in. T-Mobile will start offering a Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook in select HSPA+ markets. However, it seems as if there isn’t 3G connectivity built-in, and you’ll need to use the webConnect Rocket to get your mobile data.

Recently, Sprint's CEO, Dan Hesse sat down with the Financial Times and re-confirmed the company's option to pursue LTE if and when the time is right. Sprint and Clearwire are said to be in the enviable position of having access ample 4G spectrum that is able to support LTE on the top of the current WiMAX network. The abundance in the 4G spectrum the company has and the possibility of deploying LTE has analysts reconsidering the potential for a merger between Sprint and T-Mobile. Rumors of a merger between Sprint and T-Mobile are floating the air and they first emerged in 2008 but the talks reportedly stalled between the two companies since they used two very different and incompatible wireless technologies. If Sprint and T-Mobile both adopt LTE technology, a merger is more likely as Sprint would receive a boost from T-Mobile's 33 million subscribers and T-Mobile would gain access to the 4G spectrum which will help them as well. During his talk with Financial Times, Hesse did acknowledge that there was logic to the merger but failed to comment on the possibility that the two wireless providers were in the middle of discussions.

Recently, Engadget received news from a reader that AT&T is giving their "most valuable customers" free range-boosting femtocells by giving them a free no-strings-attached 3G MicoCell. The AT&T customer received an old-fashioned paper letter in the mail offering his family a the 3G MicroCell. All the customer had to do was drive down to a local AT&T store where he was given a 3G MicroCell with no explanation from the dumbfounded reps at the retail store. The customer did mention that his calls did frequently drop at home but he did not complain much about it and paid his $180 per month for his family plan. According to him, the only reason he feels he might be one to qualify for the free 3G MicroCell is because his contract was set to expire in the near future. We are currently waiting to hear news from AT&T about the whole issue but you can check out the letter and device below:
Earlier today, AT&T released a statement saying that the widely-reported iPhone upload speeds had been traced to a software defect ni a particular cell-site gear. The problem with Alcatel-Lucent UMTS base stations that they say "impacts less than two percent" of all AT&T customers "under certain conditions." The company said that the issue is being resolved and that there is a fix coming, but they won't mention when it will be released. They somehow still claim to be providing "normal upload speeds." The upload speed issues were first experienced and complaining about starting late last week in larger cities. Reports started pouring in from less populated areas as the holiday weekend wore on as well. iPhone 4 users that had previously been experiencing and enjoying 1.5 MB/s range stooped as low as 100 kb/. Other people within the same area didn't see any effect, leading to thoughts that the problem was relegated to particular cells. In today's statement, AT&T corporate communications confirmed the issue, stating that firmware on Alcatel-Lucent equipment was to blame for the problems. Here is what they said:
AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent jointly identified a software defect -- triggered under certain conditions – that impacted uplink performance for Laptop Connect and smartphone customers using 3G HSUPA-capable wireless devices in markets with Alcatel-Lucent equipment. This impacts less than two percent of our wireless customer base. While Alcatel-Lucent develops the appropriate software fix, we are providing normal 3G uplink speeds and consistent performance for affected customers with HSUPA-capable devices.
Furthermore, in a statement to Matt Buchanan at Gizmodo, an AT&T rep mentioned that the carrier does not "have a definite time for the Alcatel-Lucent software fix to be complete at this point; we expect to know that soon." Clearwire recently announced that it has already begun rolling out its 4G WiMAX service to seven new cities in four different states. The lucky seven cities include: Eugene, OR., Merced, CA., Visalia, CA., Yakima, WA., Tri-Cities, WA., Rochester, NY., and Syracuse, NY. If you live in or near these cities and have an HTC Evo 4G or an Overdrive 3G/4G mobile hotspot, you can sit back and enjoy your newly acquired 4G speeds. For those of you still using another carrier and utilizing 3G networks, you have another reason to jump the bandwagon to WiMAX.

The developer of the Android installer for the iPhone (iPhodroid), Sergio McFly who previously created an application that assists in installing the iDroid port that Planetbeing had developed. This specific port allowed Android on Apple's iPhone 2G and 3G. The same developer now has announced that Froyo can be unlocked by using the recent UltraSn0w tool. BlueRise's new OpeniBoot is the software to give credit for this as he managed to port UltraSn0w compatibility into it.

One of the things Apple added to the iPhone was High-Speed Uplink Packet Access (HSUPA) and it significantly improves performance. This weekend, ZDNet reports indicated 60% faster downloads and a 500% increase in upload throughput. The results will vary depending on the support for HSPA on the local AT&T cell. Various users have confirmed the increase in speeds in different areas. People in Boston are reporting double the download throughput and between eight and ten times the upload throughput. New York City users, which have notoriously been complaining about a congested network still found improvements as well in download speeds as well as five to ten times the improvement in uploads.
The iPhone 4 supporting HSUPA as well as High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) makes it Apple's first "3.5" phone. Wireless phone carrier, AT&T is using HSPA as an evolutionary step towards its 4G LTE network which they planned on deploying in 2011. The company has begun testing the new and advanced 3.5G network, capable of up to 7.2 Mbps downloads, in six cities - Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Miami - with 19 more to come by sometime this ear. The HSUPA adds an additional transport channel called the Enhanced Dedicated Channel (E-DCH), which allows for uploads as fast as 5.8 Mbps.

If you are one of the people with an Android phone that has a front-facing camera and you know your friends and family have front-facing camera phones as well there finally is a cheaper alternative for video calling. The free IM app, Fring, is finally supporting the Streak and Evo 4G whereas other phones like X10 will have to rely on their main cameras. Fring isn't locked on to any particular connection method, so if you have an unlimited monthly data plan then you will be introduced to a world of free 3G video calls. A direct competitor for Apple's FaceTime.
Given the increased video quality and the improvement in the clarity of the video as well as more tolerable lag, the affordability of mobile data all combined seems like 3G video calls might be able to make a comeback and stick around. One of the only things to really watch out for is the fact that Fring's video uses about 1MB of bandwidth each minute, so for those of you who aren't on unlimited data plans, please be careful. The real question that comes in to play is whether or not all these upgrades will actually be able to handle the bandwidth and the service thats about to be used up upon the release of Apple's iPhone 4. The wireless phone company insists they have been working hard and improving their network but as seen on iPhone 4 pre-order day, the company couldn't keep up and had several issues. The Samsung tablet which has been rumored to be released sometime in the near future has surfaced and this time on video. Previously coined names such as Galaxy Tab, the tablet has reappeared as The Samsung Galaxy Tape in its 28 second (blurry) video. The site which published the video OLED-Display.net writes that the specs of the Galaxy Tape, which will carry the P1000 model number will be:
Ryan Tate from Gawker mentioned how the list of users who have been compromised includes thousands of prominent people in the politics, media, and finance space. Goatse Security, a France-based hacking group discovered this security loophole. The hackers were apparently able to get access to the email addresses of iPad 3G users using a simple script on the AT&T's website that returned the emaila ddress of users when supplied with the owners' ICC-ID. ICC-ID is a unique identification number that is displayed mainly on SIM cards that associate every mbile phone device to a particular number. A large portion of the database is known to have been obtained by guessing the ICC-ID of potential iPad 3G users.
AT&T has acknowledged the security breach and apologized for the incident. The carrier has also confirmed that the loophole has been fixed now. Here is what they had to say:
"This issue was escalated to the highest levels of the company and was corrected by Tuesday; and we have essentially turned off the feature that provided the e-mail addresses...We are continuing to investigate and will inform all customers whose e-mail addresses and ICC IDS may have been obtained. At this point, there is no evidence that any other customer information was shared.
The person or group who discovered this gap did not contact AT&T.

We take customer privacy very seriously and while we have fixed this problem, we apologize to our customers who were impacted."
FoxNews also reported earlier that the FBI was stepping in to investigate what they referred to as the "potential cyber threat". It will be interesting to see how Apple responds to the latest breach. Blacksn0w, the unlock tool for iPhone 3GS, 3G OS 3.1.3, 3.1.2 with Baseband 05.11.07, has successfully been ported to iPhone 3GS running iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4. This Blacksn0w port to iPhone OS 4.0 is based on the original Blacksn0w unlock by GeoHot and the binaries provided by msft.guy.
This unlock iPhone OS 4.0 is demoed for iPhone 3GS running OS 4.0 beta 4 with Baseband 05.11.07. To unlock iPhone 3GS 4.0 with Blacksn0w, your 3GS 4.0 beta 4 must be jailbroken and baseband preserved at 05.11.07 with old iBoot (359.3).
The BlackSn0w unlock for iPhone 3GS OS 4.0 is kinda buggy for now, you will have to reapply the patch files after each reboot. So, if you are not an experienced user, it’s highly recommended to stay away from this patch and wait for the dev-team to release unlock for baseband 05.12.01 which is expected as soon as the iPhone 4G along with iPhone firmware 4.0 comes out.

The Jailbreak community is showing an impressive progress on jailbreak and unlock tools for iPhone OS 4.0 beta(s). Dev-Team has already released RedSn0w 0.9.5b4 and RedSn0w 0.9.5b to jailbreak iPhone OS 4.0 beta 4 and beta 1 respectively.

Innoversal, a new company in Taiwan which was looking to change the world, found itself hosting a striking 10.1-inch device that grabbed our attention. Pixel- Qi-based prototype devices were what the company was messing around with but the highlight was the expansive 3Qi capacitive touchpanel, with a 1024 x 600 resolution, and the ability to save battery life by flipping the backlight off in broad daylight. The current build was relying on three ambient light sensors to determine whether the backlight would be on or not, but after asking the company to implement a dedicated toggle on/off switch along with the border before shipping out, the company agreed. Innoversal will be shipping the product under its own branding in Taiwan, but is certainly open to selling the design to other major manufacturers who wish to slap their own logo on the device. If everything goes well, we can expect to see the device take off in September (globally), with a 16GB + 3G / WiFi model retailing for between $5430 and $550.
Thhe purchase will snag you one of the best power-saving mobile displays as of right now, a 1.66Ghz Atom N450 processor, an integrated SSD (16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities), an SDHC card slot, 8 megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, a SIM card slot (for 3G data), USB 2.0 connectivity, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, and a 6-cel (5300mAh) battery. The device will supposedly sport Windows 7, Android, Ubuntu, and Chrome OS, with the last 2 being on display at the show. Samsung South Africa's official Twitter page posted an image of a tablet which they referred to as the "Galaxy Tab". As of right now, all we know is that it runs on Android with the TouchWiz UI, operates on 3G networks, has a front-facing camera, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The fact that a "Phone" icon also exists suggests that the Galaxy Tab will also be able to place calls, although it isn't clear yet if a handset or Bluetooth device will be required. A later tweet from Samsung South Africa also claimed that "this particular one is a 7" model and has a high-res TFT screen. It makes sense considering that such a large AMOLED display would be incredibly expensive to produce and sell and that there is currently a shortage of AMOLED displays as well. iPhone OS 3.1.3 has been out for quite sometime, and the folks who relied on the unlock have been out of luck if they updated the device by accident or purchased a new iPhone since the release of the OS 3.1.3. Finally, MuscleNerd, has confirmed the release of the tool to unlock Baseband 05.12.01 for both iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

Apple is expected to announce iPhone 4G at WWDC 2010 (June 7th-June11th) which will be loaded with iPhone firmware 4.0. So, we’re just a few days away from knowing when the unlock for iPhone baseband 05.12.01 is coming out.

Sources at Boy Genius Report have received word from a "highly placed source" that Verizon Wireless is testing new iPad models compatible with the carrier's CDMA-based cellular network.
According to a highly placed source of ours, Verizon Wireless is currently testing Apple iPad devices on their network. We have been told that the model they are testing is a CDMA-compatible device, and while our source mentioned LTE in some capacity (possibly another model), we haven't been able to independently confirm that part of it.
Verizon is set to roll out its LTE (4G) network to 30 markets, which is supposedly being tested in Boston and Seattle since last August. Verizon's aggressive LTE rollout them ahead of AT&T, the current exclusive iPhone carrier in the U.S.
Apple and AT&T exclusivity deal with the iPhone and iPad has kept Verizon on the back burner, be as it may Verizon has no intentions of giving up on this just yet. Apple was expected by many observers to launch the iPad in a partnership with Verizon, but the Apple CEO Steve Jobs surprised many at the device's January introduction by announcing that it would appear as an AT&T exclusive for 3G service in the U.S. Speculation centers around AT&T having outbid its competitors with its data plans for the iPad, offering unlimited data for $29.99 per month.
Today AT&T announced, that it is moving to a $25/month, 2 GB data plan for the iPad, although customers on the existing unlimited plan can remain on it as long as they keep their plan active.
Several VoIP apps have managed to work in this functionality since Apple and AT&T started allowing it to last year, but the official Skype app has been a notable holdout. Two months after Skype started doing 3G calls on Android with Verizon, there's a 2.0 version of the app for iPhone that brings voice calls over 3G at last. Mobile iPhone calls are currently free until August. Afterwards you will need a "mobile subscription." We're currently testing out the app as we write this and it seems to work just as well as any other 3G VoIP app that we've tried. It is ordinary and nothing revolutionary.
