TinyUmbrella Updated To 4.01.01; Supports iOS 4.0.1 and iPad 3.2.1

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

Notcom, the dev behind TinyUmbrella has released yet another updated, and her released TinyUmbrella 4.01.01 for Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux OS. TinyUmbrella 4.01.01 comes with iOS 4.0.1 and iPad 3.2.1 iOS support. TinyUmbrella let you save SHSH blobs (necessary for restoring older firmware) for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. More details on TinyUmbrella can be found here.

Important (Developer Notes):

I’ve received many instances where folks would get some error message about WinSock or jvm_bind etc. This is likely due to a firewall restriction on your machine. You may need to disable your firewall and/or Anti virus software because I do the following:
  1. Load an unrelated library (iTunesMobileDevice.dll)
  2. Edit your hosts file (some anti virus software does not like this)
  3. Start a server accepting connections on port 80
  4. Write a file named (hosts.umbrella) next to your hosts file saving your original hosts file so you have a permanent backup before any of my changes (hosts.umbrella never gets overwritten)
These things raise flags with some very paranoid AV software.

Firefox Home Now Availble For iOS

Firefox Home is now available for iOS. It isn't a full-featured web browser in its own right but the app is probably as close as we're going to get to running Firefox on an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPod. The app is pretty strange so lets take a look at what it is supposed to do. According to Mozilla's description page, "Firefox Home provides access to your Firefox desktop history, bookmarks and open tabs on your iPhone." So basically, all FIrefox data on your Mac or PC transfers to the cloud and gets synced to Firefox Home or at least after you download and install the Firefox Sync add-on, restart-Firefox, set up a Firefox Sync account, and then log in. Although it isn't too complicated it doesn't have the one-click simplicity Safar on the Mac with Safari in iOS.You may wonder if all of this is worth the bother.

Unlike Opera Mini or Mobile Safari, Firefox Home is NOT a standalone browser. You can navigate through bookmarks and opened tabs imported from your main compter. You can search your items in history, tabs, or bookmarks. Once you are on a webpage you can perform all of the usual functions such as scrolling, zooming, clicking links, moving back and forward in history, emailing and copying links, all of which you can perform in almost any other app's in store app web browser. That's really it. There's no URL field, which makes normal web browsing impossible to do .There also isn't any way to open "tabs" like Mobile Safari and no way to edit bookmarks. The sync also seems to be one way as no browsing on the iPhone showed up in the history of the Firefox used at the computer.

Although there is no doubt that Mozilla would create an amazing mobile version of Firefox for the iPhone, but it isn't allowed to do so since Apple won't allow third-party users not based around in WebKit. If you are an avid Firefox user on your main computer and have several tabs open at once and hundreds of bookmarks saved, then this application is probably worth your time, if not, you probably want to pass for something else or stick to Safari. Firefox Home was a better browsing experience than Opera Mini was s well. Have you tried out Firefox Home? If soo, share your experience below.

Next Gen iPod Touch Coming This September; Brings 5MP Camera + Facetime

Earlier today, a leading UK retailer slipped some details on what it expects from the next-gen iPod Touch and the iPhone 4 holds many of the clues. According to John Lewis who says "noises we're hearing from suppliers," the next-gen device will come equipped with a 5-megapixel camera, a front-facing camera, an LED flash, and the capacity to capture video in HD (720p probably), as well as including FaceTime Wi-FI video chat. With support for iOS 4 (which should also be hitting the iPad relatively soon), the next gen iPod Touch will offer the same movement sensors as the iPhone 4. Everything seems pretty reasonable and pretty accurate as games and other titles designed to take advantage of the iPhone's new accelerometer and gyroscope will be hitting the App Store, requiring the hardware to be able to support the features to be a contender.

This whole rumor suggests that the device will probably be powered by the A4 processor that Apple utilizes in it's iPad and iPhone 4 as well. With the iTunes cloud rumor in the air, the possibility of the iPod Touch supporting 3G is still there but highly doubtful at the same time as it would imply support for VoIP and we aren't sure Apple wants to hurt their iPhone sales. That being said, this suggests that some elements of portability will exist in the iTunes cloud service, so that users can carry some tracks with them when their devices are offline (a common feature found in Spotify, MOG, and others). Apple's next music event is probably going to be held in time for the holiday shopping season, most likely early September. Will iOS-enabled Apple TV also make an appearance? Only time will tell.

[How To] Install Flash On Your iPad

ipad cases

Recently info was released on Flash 10.1 being ported to the iPad by popular hacker Comex and now the files have been released so you can get Flash support on your iPad as well, as long as it is jailbroken that is. The plugin that allows Flash on your iPad is called Frash and it doesn't do video playback yet, but you can still play games and other animations as of right now. The instructions are not as easy as just point and click but they aren't that hard either. Check out the instructions below:

How To Install Flash On Your iPad:

First and foremost make sure your iPad is jailbroken. If it isn't jailbroken, check out our Spirit jailbreak guide here.
1. Download Frash.deb and keep it nearby.
2. Decide how you're going to get files onto your iPad.
  • For Mac users, it's dead simple -- just install Netatalk, which will automatically pop up your iPad in the Finder's Sharing list.
  • Windows users can try out this guide at iClarified to get OpenSSH installed and running and use WinSCP -- it's just as easy. Either way, the login is "root" and the password is "alpine." Remember, you can seriously screw things up while you're in there, so be careful!
3. Once you've got access to the iPad's filesystem, navigate to /var/root/Media as shown here:
4. Once there, open Media and create a folder called "Cydia."
5. Open the new Cydia folder and create another new folder called "AutoInstall"
6. Upload Frash to your new folder.
7. Restart your iPad a couple times.
8. You are now done! To test it out, navigate to a page in Safari with non-video Flash content and hit the F logo to play it. Remember, no video as of right now but games and simple content still works. We did occasionally crash but it is an early iteration and it will only improve from here on out.
Jobs must have known something like this would have come along eventually. Flash on the iPad - try it out and let us know how it goes for you. If you are having trouble, try using SBSettings or the respring app to restart the Springboard, but we didn't have too many problems without it. Keep in mind that this is all at your own risk and we can't be held responsible. Here is a video showing Frash on the iPad:

Cross Platform Developers for Both iOS and Android Increase

Protect Your Privacy

Usually a number of raw apps are considered in mobile OS comparisons, but this time developers that are working behind the scenes are being compared. AppStore HQ today have gone through their dev directory and claimed to to compile a complete listing of all 55,000+ coders whose work is currently available for consumption in the Apple App Store and the Android Market. They were each put in a neat pile of Apple, Google, and Apple + Google programmers (Gapple). After seeing the chart put together, it is pretty visible to see that single-platform development is the norm (with Apple having more developers), but AppStore HQ also provides a list of some of the most well known and funded apps doing the cross-platform developing. The company suggests that a movement is on its way, one that makes software available for both sets of users. VentureBeat, another company has extrapolated the following numbers from the chart:
  • 43,185, or 80 percent, develop solely for Apple’s iOS.

  • 8,787, or 17 percent, develop solely for Google’s Android platform.

  • 1,412, or 3 percent, develop for both.

The company believes that Google has made it hard for Android developers to make profit compared to Apple developers but they have seen that customers and money is still there to be made. With the number of apps increasing steadily for the Android Market as well, it's a matter of time to see if things remain the same or whether the movement is really about. What do you think? Frash: Adobe Flash From Android Ported To Apple's iPad

After porting a preliminary release of Flash to the iPhone, the guy behind the untethered Spirit jailbreak (@Comex) for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch has now managed to run "real" Flash content on a jailbroken Apple iPad. Given the name "Frash", this is basically a port of Adobe Flash runtime for Android running on an iPad using a compatibility layer. It looks pretty promising since it's coming from the well known iPhone hacker and it definitely gives many users a sigh of relief knowing that a more solid build of Flash is in progress for the iPad.

The YouTube description of the video explains everything about the port. You can find the description below:
Frash is a port of the Adobe Flash runtime for Android to the iPhone, using a compatibility layer, by comex ( http://twitter.com/comex ). Frash can currently run most Flash programs natively in the MobileSafari browser. Frash currently only runs on the iPad, but support for other devices (3GS+ only due to technical restrictions) is planned, as well as support for iOS 4.

A release is planned for when Frash is stable. Developers are welcome to join the effort at http://github.com/comex/frash – fork it and send a pull request with your patches.

Apple Patents A Haptic Feedback Idea

Find the cell phone that’s right for you

AppleInsider is reporting that Apple is in the middle of bouncing around ideas for a screen that allows for haptic feedback on its iOS devices. A new patent that was filed this week explains a system of screens on a device designed to not only detect touch and protect the underlying technology but also provide physical feedback in various areas of the screen. As sleek and stylish as the iPhone and iPad screens are, it seems as if they all lack some functions such as typing on a keyboard or hitting buttons in games that call for a little bit more feedback than what the device currently offers. The patent also mentioned giving users a notice for when they've reached a limit (as in scrolling or panning across pictures) or providing clicks on a scroll wheel.

This idea is still unfortunately in the prototype stages and for whatever reason, Apple hasn't included any of this technology in any of the current devices in production. Guesses as to why lead to thinking of power requirements to manufacturing costs. Their interest in haptic feedback does bring some excitement as it could lead to a much richer experience when using Apple products so we hope that it won't be too long to see this idea hit devices that we see on shelves.

Thieves Targeting Apple Devices For Quick Cash

Everyone knows that thieves have a keen eye for Apple product's, especially after seeing those white earbuds which scream "I am carrying an expensive Apple device, mug me!" iPhones and iPods were too hard for many to resist and now the iPads are joining the ranks. The New York Post reports that the West Side Apple Stoer was robbed of iPads twice in the last week. Both times, thieves snagged boxed iPads as they were being unloaded from a delivery truck in broad daylight, picking up as many as five at a time while the driver was looking away and sprinting from the scene shortly after.

We know that the iPad is a hot product from all the sales figures announced. Employees at the store have increased their security to prevent future encounters from occurring but monitoring shipments is usually very tricky, as the employees dont know when the new iPads or other Apple products will arrive. Everyone who walks around and uses Apple products often should keep an eye out and be aware of their surroundings to make sure their iDevice never gets stolen.

[How To] Convert A Mini-SIM Into A Micro-SIM For iPhone 4

As you may have known by now, Apple is offering SIM-free and unlocked units of iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4 to customers in UK, France and Canada. Since these iPhones are not locked to a carrier, users can sign up with a compatible carrier of their choice.

Rumors are that unlike iPhone 3GS, the new iPhone 4 does not support the conventional mini-SIM's, instead, it uses the new micro-SIM. Micro-SIM for iPhone 4 can be a problem if your carrier does not offer micro-SIM cards yet or takes a long time to process the orders.

There is however an alternate solution. The following how-to guide will take you through a step-by-step process to transform your mini-SIM into a micro-SIM. For the process, you will require a mini-SIM, a marker pen, a ruler, cutter knife and a filing tool. The guide is quite similar to the one written for iPad's, which can be found here.

Important:

  • We would strongly recommend you to wait for your iPhone 4 so that you can confirm the size of the micro-SIM that fits iPhone 4's SIM tray before using this guide.
  • The chip on the SIM can be delicate and this procedure may permanently damage the circuitry on your mini-SIM. So do remember to proceed with caution. It is a nice idea to try the process out with a secondary SIM before carrying out the procedure on your regular SIM.

How To Convert A Mini-SIM Into A Micro-SIM For iPhone 4:

Step 1:

The most important part of a SIM is the central circuit that contains information about the subscriber's ICC-ID. The first step is to measure the area around this circuitry based on the size of the micro-SIM. 12mm x 15mm is the standard dimension of a micro-SIM. You may do this with the help of a ruler and a marker pen.

Step 2:

The mini-SIM needs to be cut along these marked lines. But before you proceed, run a cutter knife a few times over these lines to prominently mark the sections.

Step 3:

If done correctly, you may now be able to break away the plastic portion of the SIM that is not required. Alternately, use a scissor to cut along these marked lines.

Step 4:

You are almost done. Use a filing tool to soften the cut edges.

The new micro-SIM for iPhone 4 is ready. You may now insert this SIM into your iPhone for use.

Note:

UK users can checkout this link to find out more details about getting the new micro-SIM from your carrier.

"Find My iPhone" App Hits iTunes

Apple recently launched its Find My iPhone app on the iTunes App Store, a service which was previously limited to MobileMe's web interface. The App does what the title claims, it will help you find your iPhone (also iPad or iPod Touch) if you lose it or if it gets stolen. This app doesn't go on the lost / stolen device (how would you use it if your device was lost/stolen?) but rather on a different iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch, whether its yours or somebody else's. Worried owners login with their MobileMe account to map the missing iDevice and remotely lock the device or wipe the data on it. The app can only be installed on versions 3.1.3 or later devices and is currently available for free. If one of you unfortunate people ends up using it or just test it out, let us know your thoughts by dropping a comment below.

US Copyright Office To Define The State of iPhone Jailbreak

Any day now the U.S Copyright Office and the Librarian of Congress are due to rule whether the iPhone jailbreaking should be exempted from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The scoop on whats going on all started about eighteen months ago when the Electronic Frontier Foundation asked regulators to add jailbreaking to a list of explicit exemptions to the DMCA's anti-circumvention provisions. For those of you who don't already know, jailbreaking is when you hack the phone's OS to allow it to run any app on the phone, including apps not authorized by Apple. When last reviewed three years ago, regulators approved six exemptions, including the ability to unlock your phone to change carriers. Apple and it's very closed business model has been enjoying since 2007, when the iPhone debuted. Apple says its unlawful to jailbreak and not take legal action against the millions who have jailbroken their phones and used the underground app store, Cydia. The company doesn't deny tha the closed marketplace is what made the success of the iPhone possible, and sold more than three billion apps.

The EEF's Fred von Lohmann said that allowing jailbreaking world create an app gold rush, and bring the unauthorized app market to the mainstream. So what's this all about? Every three years, regulators look into proposed exemptions to the DMCA, passed in 1998. The act would forbid circumventing encryption technology to copy or modify copyrighted works. In this case, Apple says the DMCA protects the encryption built into the bootloader that starts up the iPhone OS operating system. Apple declined to be interviewed for the story but in an April security bulletin, it said "Unauthorized modification of iPhone OS has been a major source of instability, disruption fo services, and other issues."

In the video below, von Lohmann explains why EFF made the jailbreaking request to government regulators:

Flash Ported for iPhone; Coming To Jailbroken iDevices Soon

Adobe Flash Catalyst CS5

Developer of the Spirit Jailbreak utility, Comex, recently tweeted a video showing Adobe Flash working on the iPhone. He stated in the video description that this is "preliminary" as cab be seen by minor graphical glitches on the scree, but it does open and execute Flash based sites with no problems.

Apple's decision to ditch Flash has led quite a few developers to work on their own workarounds to get Flash content working on the iPhone. Some of the most notable workarounds include iMobileCinema, a Safari plugin that has been around for a while that attempts to play video content embedded in Flash, Gordon and Smokescreen, two Flash interpreters written entirely in Javascript (which iOS and MobileSafari handle just fine), Flash In A Pinch and CloudBrowser, which actually render Flash content on a remote server, then stream down the images and sound of the webpage to your iDevice. However, none of these workarounds could really be considered a "Flash player" considering the limitations that each solution has in place.
No other information has been released yet about the availability. It is also unknown at this point if this project is to be eventually worked into Safari as its own plugin or if it will have to stay as a standalone app. This project, should it come to fruition, would be the first real Flash player for iPhone, and comex has already proven his skill by releasing the first ever untethered 3G S/G3 iTouch jailbreak.

Check out the video below:

Taking a slightly different approach, the team at the Artefact Group have been working on a service called Flash In A Pinch

Despite Steve Job's personal thoughts on Flash being a dying technology, it is very clear that many people want to use the technology on their iDevices (or at least developers want to find ways to put it there). We recently heard of Smokescreen, a browser plug-in that takes apart the SWF binaries and reassembles them into a format that Apple can read. Taking a slightly different approach, the team at the Artefact Group have been working on a service called Flash In A Pinch. At the moment it is only in a concept stage, a pretty sweet concept at that. How it works is: Flash is rendered on Artefact's servers, which stream the images to the user's Safari Browser. By placing a Javascript layer on top of the content, the user's touch interactions can be sent back to the server, making it fully interactive. As of right now, the whole idea is too sluggish to use and there is no sound, but looking at an overview, it is a great start. You can check out the video below and you can also click here for technical details as well as more videos.

AT&T and FBI Investigate iPad 3G Security Breach

Ryan Tate from Gawker mentioned how the list of users who have been compromised includes thousands of prominent people in the politics, media, and finance space. Goatse Security, a France-based hacking group discovered this security loophole. The hackers were apparently able to get access to the email addresses of iPad 3G users using a simple script on the AT&T's website that returned the emaila ddress of users when supplied with the owners' ICC-ID. ICC-ID is a unique identification number that is displayed mainly on SIM cards that associate every mbile phone device to a particular number. A large portion of the database is known to have been obtained by guessing the ICC-ID of potential iPad 3G users.

AT&T has acknowledged the security breach and apologized for the incident. The carrier has also confirmed that the loophole has been fixed now. Here is what they had to say:
"This issue was escalated to the highest levels of the company and was corrected by Tuesday; and we have essentially turned off the feature that provided the e-mail addresses...We are continuing to investigate and will inform all customers whose e-mail addresses and ICC IDS may have been obtained. At this point, there is no evidence that any other customer information was shared.

The person or group who discovered this gap did not contact AT&T.

We are continuing to investigate and will inform all customers whose e-mail addresses and ICC IDS may have been obtained.

We take customer privacy very seriously and while we have fixed this problem, we apologize to our customers who were impacted."

FoxNews also reported earlier that the FBI was stepping in to investigate what they referred to as the "potential cyber threat". It will be interesting to see how Apple responds to the latest breach. They have yet to issue an official statement in this regard. Stay tuned for more information by following us on Twitter and/or subscribing to our RSS feeds.
