Motorola Droid 2 Coming Packaged With Android 2.2

The Motorola Droid 2 is on it's way and more and more information is being leaked about it. Today there are a pair of independent leaks confirming that the second coming of Motorola's QWERTY keyboard smartphone will be running Android 2.2 (Froyo) right out of the box. Droid Life has a tipster that has apparently spent some time with the device describing its keyboard as "phenomenal" and pointing out that it feels notably snappier than the original Droid. The Froyo connection was reiterated by Phandroid's sources, which provide images of Verizon's device database indicating once again that Android 2.2 and Droid 2 will be matched and paired for when the launch codes get entered.

The device is rumored to be released earlier than expected and rumor has it that it might be dropping on August 12 which is 11 days sooner than previously mentioned. GeoHot Ready To Release iPhone 4 Jailbreak?

A very curious post on Twitter is causing some people to believe that a jailbreak release is imminent from Geohot. The move would be quite surprising if made since recently Geohot's alleged and self-proclaimed "retirement" from the jailbreak community - a move where we saw Geohot cancels his Twitter account, set his blog to private, and assign good friend Mike Cohenn as his proxy, nothing all future messages would come through Mike.

Today a message from Mike was received and it has the jailbreak community at the tip of their seats. The message specifically said: What's a good time to make it ra1n? It could easily be misinterpreted but Cohenn's relationship with Geohot is solid and it stands to reason that the jailbreak master may have simply thrown everyone off his scent to toil in private for the last few days of the jailbreak release preparation. Of course, this is entirely speculation but if advised by Geohot to follow Cohenn for the latest jailbreak update, then maybe this tweet is both meaningful and newsworthy.

As with much of these news about jailbreaking and unlocking, time will only tell what (if anything) this tweet may actually mean. Samsung Working On “Unbreakable” AMOLED Displays

As you may already know Samsung Super AMOLED displays are getting pretty popular despite the iPhone 4 using a different screen technology. The manufacturer is already running low on supplies and furthermore they are working on new technology which will probably be higher in demand than the current scarce supplies. Samsung is reportedly working on an unbreakable Samsung AMOLED display. OLED-Display.net is reporting that within the next two years, Samsung is aiming to have ultra-rugged, unbreakable smartphone screens available to OEMs. The report doesn't detail whether he digitzer will be included on this specific AMOLED display (the digitizer is what registers touch input and is what makes Super AMOLED displays "super") but if we to guess, it probably won't be. If you don't want to take anyone's word for whether something like this exists or if it can be made, you don't have to. HTC Droid Incredible To Get Android 2.2 Froyo Update Soon

We just recently received a tip about the HTC Droid Incredible software update that many users are probably waiting to hear about. An email from HTC sent in as a tip mentioned the following information:

The email confirms the much anticipated Incredible update that began rolling out this weekend will most likely be stopped and a much better and improved Froyo-inclusive update will be pushed out in the coming weeks. Morotola Droid X Privacy Issues Emerge

If you are one of the people who bought the new Motorola DROID X you bought one rock solid handset but we've been informed of a privacy flaw that the phone has. The Motorola DROID X will actually show text message and call history logs, even if you have deleted these items from the phone, via its contacts history function. It is never a good thing to find out that your new gadget has a vicious security hole revealing some potentially embarassing or confidential material that you would rather keep from others. All you have to do is scroll over to contact history in the contacts app and you'll find the deleted information there. The issue disappears after an entier phone wipe but its still disconcerting that any threaded text message conversation or recent calls will still show up after deletion.

You can check out a quick run through in the video below. After placing a call to Verizon to investigate further the company mentioned that they are aware of and are working on the fix. They did mention that this is visible on other Motorola handsets and it looks like it's tied to the Motorola BLUR's interface.

Alternate Method To Unlock iPhone 4 With UltraSn0w Revealed

The iPhone 4 has been unlocked with UltraSn0w yet again using another method out of the three ways the iPhone Dev Team has to implement the iPhone 4 unlock exploit. MuscleNerd has shared an unlocked iPhone 4 screenshot. Previously, Planetbeing succeeded in implementing the first way of the unlock. For those of you who don't already know both MuscleNerd and Planetbeing have been working on an iPhone 4 unlock for a few weeks now. They found an exploit to unlock the iPhone 4 and they plan on using 3 ways to take advantage of the loop hole to inject the baseband unlock. Planetbeing has already unlocked the iPhone 4 using one of the 3 ways (which can be found in his video here) and now MuscleNerd has implemented the unlock using the second way. They'll release the one which is more stable, fast and easy.c

Apple Working On New And Improved MacBook Air And iPod Touch

According to the Taiwan based publication, Digitimes, the next-generation MacBook Air will have an 11-inch screen and an ultra-low voltage (ULV) Intel Core i-series processor. The report claims that Digitimes is getting their information from "upstream component makers" and also echoes increasingly common rumors that the new iPod Touch released this year will have a camera. The report also claims that the refreshed MacBook Air would be produced in relatively few numbers, with only 400,000 units to ship by the end of the year. If the report information turns out to be true, then it would move the MacBook Air to almost netbook size although it'll still have a very significant price premium compared to most ultraportables. Apple's lightest notebook will start at a hefty price for $1,499.

The Digitimes story, with credit going to senior analyst Mingchi Kuo claims that the new MacBook Air will be thinner, lighter, and supposedly also have a ULV Intel CPU possibly the Core i5-560UM). Other rumors such as a 3G chip and more SSD options were not mentioned in the report. The MacBook Air has always been at a strange position in Apple's lineup since it's performance is like that of low-end MacBooks but the device as a whole is priced near the MacBook Pro range. It has done pretty well but is far outsold by the other more mainstream models. Many analysts have been challenging Apple for years to try and come out with a netbook but the company seems to ignore the requests. With a lower cost chip, Apple could easily reduce the price somewhat, but it is still very unlikely to see Apple netbooks priced below $500.

Mingchi Kuo also claims that the fourth generation iPod Touch will have Apple's A4 processor and a 3 megapixel camera. Other rumors have said that the Touch will have two cameras, one with a front-facing sensor, allowing FaceTime support. Kuo didn't refer to any second camera in his report though the next generation iPod Touch is expected in August or September when Apple has traditionally refreshed the iPod line.

iPhone Dev Team Member Planetbeing Shows Off iPhone 4 Carrier Unlock

Planetbeing of the iPhone Dev Team has just tweeted a video where he explains the current state of unlocking and jailbreaking the iPhone 4. In the video, he shows off his iPhone 4 which is unlocked and proves to the audience it is unlocked by showing off the Rogers (Canadian wireless phone company) symbol on the iPhone 4 itself as well as by dialing 611 and putting the call on speaker, at which point a Rogers automated message goes off. He continues on to explain that the current unlocking method "sucks," is very sloppy, and takes five minutes to fully run through. The plans are to go back and clean it up a little so it is much more efficient at accomplishing its goal, the unlock the iPhone 4. Planetbeing then moves on to discuss how Apple has made specific countermeasures to prevent jailbreaking and unlocking the way it has been done in the past. This time around, the iPhone Dev Team has thought of several different ways to accomplish the goal and they have only successfully done it using one of these ideas. Musclenerd is going to try approaching the idea using a different method and see how that goes. What this means for all of us? Waiting. Planetbeing did mention that we would not want to use the unlock and jailbreak at it's current state and we firmly believe he knows what he is doing and what's he talking about, so if waiting is what he suggests, waiting is what we shall do (although we don't really have a choice anyway). Slick HTC 1 Concept Designed By Andrew Kim

Who doesn't like sleek and stylish looking designs nowadays? We are hoping that HTC is paying good attention to Andrew Kim, the person who created a great looking concept design for the so-called HTC 1. The HTC 1 is supposed to be a premium Android phone that is to be differentiated from the company's mainstream models while better harmonizing physical and software design. With that in mind, Kim has come up with a slick minimalist machined brass with a striking interpretation of the HTC Sense UI. His interpretation breaks down the artificial division of the homescreen and widget, and instead gives you a full screen for widgets to keep you up to do with news, social networking, and more. A new media player and cross-platform instant-messaging / communicating apps were also in mind.

Another thing that is a bit striking was the fact that Kim reckons oleophobic displays aren't good enough for keeping smartphones clean. Instead he decided on a UV light behind the glass touchscreen. The top and bottom panels can serve as flip-down stands and the phone also contains stereo speakers (one at each end) and inspiration taken from Leica camera and high end watches. The end result is a beautifully stunning phone with a sleek and minimalistic design. We wonder if HTC will pursue this concept further and if this high-end Android smartphone will be able to compete in today's market. What do you think? Share your comments below!

iPhone Dev Team "One Final Step Away" From Unlocking iPhone 4

As per our recent post, we all know that iPhone Dev-Team has been working hard to bring us the iPhone 4 unlock. Earlier this morning MuscleNerd confimed via a tweet that iPhone 4 unlock is "just one final step" away.

As per his tweets:

It means the “next step” demoed in http://is.gd/doLnz has been reached, so now there’s just 1 final step

Next step is to keep the task backgrounded like we did for 3G/3GS http://is.gd/dh7Jh. Backgrounded task is the unlock.

This is great news for everyone who is waiting to unlock iPhone 4 on iOS 4. As for the iPhone 4 jailbreak, Comex has already confirmed that he has successfully jailbroken iPhone4 and is now waiting for the iOS 4.01 / 4.1. GeoHot has also successfully jailbreak iPhone 4 but there’s no ETA from him either.

If you’re waiting to unlock iPhone 4 or want to jailbreak iPhone 4, make sure not to update to any future firmware updates otherwise you won’t be able to unlock/jailbreak iOS 4.

JavaScript Test Proves MeeGo To Be Better Than Android 2.2

Recently, the folks over at Carrypad put Nokia's new OS, MeeGo, through the same Sunspider JavaScript tests that both iOS 4 and Android 2.2. Nokia's mobile OS of choice turned out to be rather impressive during the test boasting a 4.2 seconds. Compared to iOS 4 which took 10.9 seconds and Android 2.2 which took 5.8 seconds, looks like Nokia is headed in the right direction. To be fair, the Aava phone being used to conduct these tests packs a 1.5 GHz Intel Moorestown processor (the Sunspider JavaScript tests lean heavily on a mobile processor) and is actually not a production phone. Another thing to note though is that the tests used FireFox Mobile and not the MeeGo manufactured browser (giving MeeGo a chance to perform possibly better or worse, depending on how Nokia designed their software). Regardless though, the speed tests are pretty impressive. All we need now is a production MeeGo handset to test that out and compare it to the other mobile OS's more realistically.

Microsoft Predicted To Break $1B+ With Xbox Live Revenue

According to estimates made by analysts, Microsoft's Xbox Live premium gaming service is on the road to generate over $1 billion in revenue for the fiscal year that ended on June 30th. A lot of this revenue is coming from Xbox Live Gold members who offer up cash for additional content such as game add-ons, avatars, and movies. Microsoft was uncharacteristically forthcoming about its Xbox Live memberships and confirmed that over half of its Xbox Live members pay for the premium Gold service at an average price tag of $50 per year. Although it still holds the number two spot underneath Nintendo Wii in total console sales, this is all some pretty good news for Microsoft's gaming division. It bodes well for the upcoming launch of the Kinect motion controller which will hopefully attract a new crowd as well as entertain the old crowd of Xbox Live users.

XML File Confirms HTC Mondrian and Mozart Running Windows Phone 7 OS

Conflipper, the man known for his ROMs has come across some interesting information regarding HTC phones and Windows Phone 7. He has come across links to HTC's official MMS specs page for both the HTC Mondrian and HTC Mozart, both confirmed to be running Windows Phone 7 by the browser ID which can be found listed as "Microsoft Internet Explorer Mobile 7." The HTC Mondrian's XML can be found here and the HTC Mozart's XML can be found here. The MMS info doesn't reveal too much, except that both devices will have WVGA screens and both are slates without keyboards. the XML also refers to supported Bluetooth profiles, A2DP, Object push, and of course various hands-free profiles. Unlike the iPhone, Windows Phone 7 is said to support A2DP and MMS at launch. Although Windows Mobile is the main aspect of these handset releases, there should be at least 6 handsets minimum released by the end of the year running Windows Phone 7, so stay tuned for more info by following us on Twitter and/or subscribing to our RSS feeds.

Next Gen iPod Touch Coming This September; Brings 5MP Camera + Facetime

Earlier today, a leading UK retailer slipped some details on what it expects from the next-gen iPod Touch and the iPhone 4 holds many of the clues. According to John Lewis who says "noises we're hearing from suppliers," the next-gen device will come equipped with a 5-megapixel camera, a front-facing camera, an LED flash, and the capacity to capture video in HD (720p probably), as well as including FaceTime Wi-FI video chat. With support for iOS 4 (which should also be hitting the iPad relatively soon), the next gen iPod Touch will offer the same movement sensors as the iPhone 4. Everything seems pretty reasonable and pretty accurate as games and other titles designed to take advantage of the iPhone's new accelerometer and gyroscope will be hitting the App Store, requiring the hardware to be able to support the features to be a contender.

This whole rumor suggests that the device will probably be powered by the A4 processor that Apple utilizes in it's iPad and iPhone 4 as well. With the iTunes cloud rumor in the air, the possibility of the iPod Touch supporting 3G is still there but highly doubtful at the same time as it would imply support for VoIP and we aren't sure Apple wants to hurt their iPhone sales. That being said, this suggests that some elements of portability will exist in the iTunes cloud service, so that users can carry some tracks with them when their devices are offline (a common feature found in Spotify, MOG, and others). Apple's next music event is probably going to be held in time for the holiday shopping season, most likely early September. Will iOS-enabled Apple TV also make an appearance? Only time will tell.

HTC "Gold" With Windows Phone 7 Rumored To Release In November

An online phone comparison site Omio, said they got the scoop on some key UK handsets that are set to debut in the second half of 2010. Supposedly the news is a fresh leak from an unspecified UK retiler, the roadmap contains info on phones such as the HTC Vision, being released next to the previously unheard of HTC Ace all arriving alongside the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 in October, while November will be the month HTC's first Windows Phone 7 device will be released together with the QWERTY-blessed Nokia E7 and Samsung i8700 Cetus.

Other informtion released included the Nokia E7 which is probably the QWERTY equipped Symbian^3 smartphone that we have been hearing of and that has been labeled the N9 or the N8-001/N8-002 by some. This phone has an aluminum body, like the N8 does, together with a tilting AMOLED touchscreen. Slotting into the Eseries line-up would have made far more sense given Nokia's move away from Symbian^3 in their Nseries devices.

As for the Windows Phone 7 HTC phone, the device is tipped off to be the HTC gold. Although there are no details as to specs at this point many people are excited. The HTC Vision is the phone whose info was leaked earlier this week and nobody seems to know what the HTC Ace is. Finally, Samsung's i8700 Cetus is similarly mysterious but te name suggests that it runs the company's wave-themed bada OS.

Omio says they are 100 percent sure of the source and time will definitely help confirm that pretty soon. It is already July as of right now so the first of the handsets should already be on route to be released soon. Is AT&T Capping iPhone Data Upload Speeds?

Recently, many users from The MacRumors forums are comparing their recent upload speeds from their iPhone's and are complaining about what appears to be capped uploads at 100 kbps rather than the 1.6mbps norm. The users have been comparing rates captured with tools such as Speedtest.net's Speed Test to put numbers on the perceived performance drops, which is considerably large compared to the way things were just a week or two ago. According to the thread, affected cities include: NYC, Central Jersey, Boston, Orlando, Seattle, South Jersey/Philly, Columbus, Cleveland, West Houston, Phoenix, Northern Colorado, St. Paul/Minnesota, Suffolk County/Long Island, Quad Cities, South Jersey, Denver, Detroit Metro, and Cincinnati.

Upload speeds affect the ability to do things such as sending pictures and video-email over the 3G network, as well as to upload any kind of bandwidth-hungry data using your 3G connection. The folks over at TUAW gave the test a spin in Denver using SpeedTest.net's application as well as FCC Mobile Broadband Test and INetQCheck. They said they experienced as the ones reported by the Macrumors forumgoers. Comparing both runs on INetQCheck tests with those of SpeedTest.Net, many users didn't even crack 100kbps using 3G.

The question that arises is why the sudden change? AT&T has been contacted by several different people but everyone has yet to hear back from them due to the holiday. Our guess is that this comes in line due to AT&T's recent data plan changes, probably in an attempt to enforce data austerity and guard AT&T's business from high bandwidth demands. Some people suggest that the hypothetical upload caps are a consequence of holiday weekend infrastructure work and that speeds will return to normal tomorrow.

Apple Working On Cloud Capable iTunes

News of iTunes receiving a big upgrade late this summer introducing cloud capability have been running rampant recently. The update isn't exactly a surprise for anyone as such a development has been widely anticipated for what seems like forever now but there are still doubts about a September rollout. A Boy Genius Report indicates the new cloud capabilities for iTunes will be partitioned into three groups:

1. Streaming music and movies from Apple's servers to your computers, devices, etc.
2. Streaming music and movies from your home computers to your other computers, remote devices, etc.
3. Wireless iTunes syncing with devices.

Although all these features sound good, getting them up and working might take Apple longer then expected because some of them includes issues beyond Apple's control that can continue to delay the iTunes update. An example of these issues include, licenses that Apple will need to obtain from a variety of content providers, including the top four music labels in the US. Although the company has been hard at work on the major iTunes tweaks since last Winter, it is possible that Google's rumored and much discussed iTunes competitor (streaming music, with songs for download) could be released before iTunes gets the cloud capability that everyone has been anticipating.

Upcoming Sn0wBreeze Update To Jailbreak iPhone 3GS (New Bootrom) On iOS4

iH8Sn0w recently announced that he has managed to jailbreak iPhone 3GS with the new BootRom on iOS4 firmware with Sn0wBreeze. He has shared a video demo of the iPhone 3GS with the new BootRom running iOS4 with an unreleased version of Sn0wBreeze jailbreak utility.

As per a tweet from iH8Sn0w about the iPhone 3GS new BootRom jailbreak with Sn0wBreeze:

• We assume that it’ll be possible to jailbreak iPod Touch 3G iOS 4 as well provided that you’ve SHSH for 3.1.2 saved but there’s no word from iH8Sn0w on this.
• It’s a tethered jailbreak. For those who don’t know, a tethered jailbreak device once turned off/Reboot/run out of battery, you need to connect it to computer and execute a tool to boot up the device.

CDMA Compatible iPhone 4 Coming To Verizon In January 2011

A CDMA version of the iPhone has been a rumor for a long time now, but Bloomberg says it won't be a rumor for much longer. The site is claiming that Verizon, the largest U.S mobile phone company will finally introduce coverage for Apple's iPhone early next year (as soon as January). Bloomberg is reporting that two familiar sources shared inside information about AT&T's iPhone exclusivity coming to an end.

Verizon Wireless, which is currently working hard on rolling out a high-speed fourth-generation network, is expected to include the iPhone in its big new product unveiling in January at the Consumer Electronics Show. The iPhone being covered on another network will dramatically improve performance and user experience for both AT&T and Verizon customers because the network expansion will reduce the burdens that are currently present on AT&T's congested network, due to it being the solo carrier of the iPhone in the U.S.

Analyst John Hodulik from UBS AG tells Bloomberg that Apple is going to drastically "increase the number of devices it sells in the US when exclusivity at AT&T ends."he also mentioned how its "hard to ignore the quality issues AT&T has faced." Niether Apple, AT&T, or Verizon are commenting on the Bloomberg report released, which makes it seem the iPhone coming to Verizon is more than just a mere possibility. There are some folks out there who believe this is all a stunt and that Verizon is releasing this information just to get people to hold off from purchasing their iPhone 4 right now while they release their "hot new phone lineup."
